THE BEGGARS' STRIKE.

OBJECTION TO APPOINTED

GUARDIANS.

CRIPPLED DELEGATES AT MASS MEETING.

Sanged (U.P.):-Known as "The Beggars' Strike," this town has just witnessed one of the most unusual incidents in the history of Southern Hungary.

Due to the fact that the beggars of Szeged had grown to incon- venient proportions, the citizens in self-defence were forced to adopt measures separating the genuinely destitute townspeople from others who came in from the countryside surrounding towns because they found begging easier than working. This separation having been ac complished and the outsiders have been escorted to the outskirts of the city and told to clear out, the re- maining genuine Szeged beggars were told that there would no longer be any necessity for them to beg' since the municipality had arranged that gach beggar was to have a guardian appointed.

With admirable courtesy they sent two cripped delegates to iu form the police of the date and the place of the meeting, and the names of the beggars who desired to address it, but the police refused to grant them the perini without which no public meeting may be held in Hungary.
