CRICKET.

H.K.C.C. THE REST OF THE LEAGUE.

Reflections Thereon!

There is no getting away from the fact that batting in the Colony is at a pretty low ebb, even when one discounts liberally for a bad wicket. I would be only to glad to explain it by saying the bowling is of a very high standard, but I fear that

KEEN STRUGGLE IN SENIOR would hardly be true. On Saturday

DIVISION.

Hayward and Hancock alone played, good innings for the Club: Mit chell's was plucky but he was not

bis, safe, though he drove quite well. For the Rest Brace and Hung alone looked like real bats.

In fielding the Rest were very nearly brilliant. Their picking up and throwing in were brilliant and their entching very safe. One bad chance was put down in the slips d Brace dropped & gasty one at mid-on: but he was rather tied up with long-on, and had to turn right round...

The Pisy. Hancock won the toss and opened with Hayward and Moor to Hung and Baker, the latter at the Gas Works end. It was pretty obvious that Hung was trying to bowl too fast and several bad long-hops were despatched to the leg boundary. Baker, who had been dead off the week before, settled down to bowl very steadily and early on flicked one very fast off the pitch that only just went over the top of Hay- ward's middle stick: Brace-relieved Hung and, pitching up more than Inst week, had Moor plum 1.b.. at once (35-1-11).

:.

Wales bowled steadily for the Club, taking one wicket for 10 runs in 7 overs. Ean- cock was very well advised to rest him early. Parker can fairly claim this season to be one of the best bowlers, here, and if he can only eliminate the bad length ball he serves up nearly once an over he will be most useful. Dobbie bowled a lot of good ones and several bad He was a bit expensive. ones. Parker may well be pleased with his analysis of 10.2--16-5.

For the Future.

One thing is pretty clear and that is that Anderson has got to lose that nibble of his at the off ball if he's going to make the interport. Zimmern was not quite so good be hind the sticks, though several of the balls that went for byes behaved rather unkindly. Hung clearly will merit a good trial-he still wants to.. go a little more all out in running. the first single. Madar was not im- pressive nor was E. F. Fincher though the latter felded admirably. Hancock's innings made it abund antly clear that if his health will stand it, he cannot leave himself out of the team.

It seems to me

that the nucleus of the side will be Hancock, Pearce, Brace, Hayward, Owen Hughes and Wales, with Parket as a probable. But there is a horrible rumour that Wales may be transferred to Shanghai. If were Hancock I would go round and insure him against this fate at once, and I think-(I say, I think) should insure him with the Union Insurance of Canton

Olub's Bad Patch. Thereafter the Club batting for time degenerated into mere trips, and five more wickets fell for the addition of eighteen runs, Quick was brilliantly caught by Hung at short leg in trying to get Brace's short one away, and Dobbie a few balls later gave the same fieldsman

I quite forget. I feel quite sure an easy catch. Meantime Baker that they were wrong in fielding the had been plugging steadily along at cat-of-extra-cover for an over-ar his end, and he had the satisfaction 10. I forget the precise penalty. of bowling Hayward with a beauty But from that moment, the Beat which came very fast off the pitch were doomed. The same thing hap and came straight through. This, of course, only former wisely went for the bowling applies to its entering the field while Parker did not get out. They when Hong Kong is batting. raised the total by thirty runs when Mitchell was taken at slip off Hung, who had resumed. At the same total a shooter from Haker hit the baec. of. Parker's middle stick (83-8-7).

Hancock clearly realized that his only chance wus to force the game. He hit a tremendous six from an off drive of the fast bowler, and two balls later got a lovely four past extra cover, eaaily the best shot of the match. When Snally he was caught by E. F. Fincher off a big hit that went straight up on the off he had scored 31, including a six, four fours and a three. It was a most cheerful innings, quite in his old vein. A four came from Bowker and then the end arrived.

bowled Deck and crop by a beauty from the same bowler, who, how- ever, was putting down some loose ones. Brace helped himself to four fours but in trying to hook another short 'un which awung he was taken at the wicket. Teddy Fincher, who had never looked comfortable, pick ed a beauty from Wales which just flicked the top of his off stump, and four were down for thirty. Hung, however, batted excellently, hooking delightfully, and he and E. F. Fin cher added thirty, when the latter was 1.b.w. to Parker who had re- lieved Wales. From then on Parker took charge of the game and once Hung was bowled the Club never looked in danger in spite of some pretty wild chucking which gave lot of overthrows. Baker alone looked likely to stop, till Owen Hughes took a catch that anyone of ordinary stature would not have got near. There seems a certain amount of doubt about the last catch at the wicket. It really did not matter as I don't think Hamson or Thomson really felt like stopping long. They did not look it.

It possessed only one serious drawback. The four-bladed lifting windmill had to be spun by hand before taking off, and erea then the 140 revolutions per minute could not be attained. Con- sequently, the machine ran rather farther than an ordinary aeroplane before rising from the ground.

Ever since that first demonstra tion, Setor de la Cierva has been working on the problem of devising A starter for the. windmill. He learnt to fly, and carried out many long test flights with the Autogiro, including a crossing of the English

Channel, but, although these tests led to many minor, improvements in the machine, the starting problem remained unsolved. Attempts were made to insert some form of clutch between the engine and the wind- Drill shaft so that the engine power could be used for rotating the wind mill (In fight, it should be ex plained, the windmill is free, and not powerdriven in any way.) Mechanical difficulties proved in- superable, however, and it was only recently that Senor de la Cierva succeeded.

The new starter is of the sang

In flight, the deflector is lowered so that it comes almost ash with the top of the fuselage and created no extra drag

The defector windmill starter is still in process of development but, in a crude form, it has been tried thoroughly by Senor de la Cierva, and it has proved entirely succes ful "New Autogiros incorporating the deflector in an improved form are now being built.

Wheel brakes will be fitted to these machines and the pilot will start his engine with the brakes on and run it until the lifting wind- mill is rotating at sufficient speed. He will then release the wheel brakes and take of after an ex- tremely short run over the ground.
