AN ECLIPSE.

King Mongkut provided for Sir Harry Drd and his party a build. ing 140 feet long and 50 feet wide, which contained a salon capable of accommodating 40 to 50 people at dinner, And Sir Harry was in formed that he might invite as many parsons as he liked to meals, which would he provided at any hours he might choose. The culi- nary arrangements were in charge of 4 French chef, with an Italian and a host of native assistants. Bangkok and Singapore and all the country around were scoured for delicacies. There was a fine stock ol wines, and plenty of ice. All this at a seaside jungle camp well over 100 miles from Bangkök.

The visit of His Present Majesty to the Pattani observation camp will be more matter of fact. The exact length of his stay is not koown at present, but most likely be will live aboard the handsome royal yacht during his visit. He will sail from Hua Hin, Siam's beautiful seaside resort, where he has just dedicated his new seashore palace.
King Rama VII, will observe the eclipse with great interest for he is keenly interested in science. The photographic work will hold a large part of his attention, for he is a proficient amateur photographer.
The recurrence of the eclipse at this time can be viewed as the mark of another eza for Siam. It was during King Mongkut's reign that the opening phases of modern ization were seen King Mongkut, during his long residence in monastery, devoted himself not only to the study of Buddhism, but also to European languages and sciences which had not, before been known in Siam. It was during his reign that treaties with European Powers and America were framed, thus opening up Siam to regular inter- course with the outside world. The work of modernization was carried forward in rapid fashion under King Chula cngkoru, who as youth of 15. was also a witness of the eclipse of 1568.

And now, with a new eclipse about to occur, Siam too completes a preliminary cycle of her modern advancement Now, politically in dependent, financially and econ omically sound, with a keen-minded, serious, energetic young man at the head of the State, Siam may take the forthcoming celestial spectacle as the beginning point of a new cycle of progress.

MRS. SOUTHORN'S SPEECH.
Mrs. Southern said :--
This meeting is not the occasion for a speech, but there are just one or two remarks I should like to make.. I think that all connected with the M.C., and Hong Kong Women's League must feel that the report is eminently satisfactory.
During 1928 we realised over $19,000-the best result since the bumper years of 1999 and 1923 which have even then only exceeded the present result by about $1,500. By looking to this result, I am con- scions of one great omission in the report and that is praise due to Mrs. Creary. It was Mrs. Creasy who wrote the report, so the reason is not far to seek. But, as acting Patroness, it is a very pleasant duty to express our uastiated thanks to Mrs. Creasy. She is an old friend of mine, but I shall not be accused of undue bias when I say that for enthusiasm, cheerful- fulness, and efficiency, Mra. Creasy is hard to beat. (Applause.)
This Healthy Budget,
I am conscious of a slight feeling of apprehension in taking up the President's office again, but when the results of 1999 shall be totalled up or they will be weighed in the balance and found wanting, in comparison with 1998. But I re- joice in this healthy budget of 1928 with all my heart Among various sections is Hong Kong we are look. ed upon either with amused toler ance or as a perennial, pest or with friendliness and enthusiasm, That the latter feeling predominates is obvious from the result-you can not beat your last year's record and produce $18,000 without a real backing.
We feel that we have
these countless friends and workers of all communities ready and willing to help all the good causer to which the $19,000 are allocated. Pr
All Halpers Thanked. While on this subject. I should like to point out that every new organisation that made an applica tion to us this year for assistance was given a sum out of our surplus after dealing with the old organisa tions which we have supported for years past. I thank all who have worked so loyally with us during the past year. Some have left us, alas, but we welcoms those who have stepped into their places. A special word of thanka must be expressed to Mrs. Charnock, who worked so capably as Hon. Secre- tary for last year, and we welcome Mrs. Lloyd as her successor,
Personally, I wish to express to the Press my sense of deep in debtedness to them for unfailing and invaluable assistance. We have plans for the future and we hope to crystalise them at a meeting shortly. We propose to conduct our campaign on different lines this year to mark the tenth anniversary of the founding of the League and
