DOLLY VARDON HAT

which makes it different to all others.

That something is the charm and distinction. which marks the creation of an artist.

Tennis or golf claim you during the morning freshness-in the afternoon the beach, or, perhaps, a chat over a cup of tea on your verandab, watching the sun go down behind the hills.

To get the fall enjoyment out of each minute, you must be rightly dressed in cool becoming garments, such as those little frocks of voile or art silk now on view in our salons.

BLACK MARKS FOR WIVES.

HOLLYWOOD. MEN SIT IN JUDGMENT.

ENGLISHMEN REPLY.

The men of Hollywood, have pre sented a united front to an admir- ing world.

All of them have grievances against wives, and of the three dozen of them interview ed in America no two have the

same complaint.

Adolphe Menjou objects to the woman who takes no interest in her husband's career, George Fawcett to their bossing" ways, George Bancroft to a wife having hobbies which interfere with home life, Conrad Nagel to wives' excitement and hysterics when faced with trivial difficulties, Richard Arlen to nagging though he adds that modern wives seem to him to be practically perfect, Some of the black marks go to wives who:—

Talk too much.

Cense to be charming is soon. As they are married. Dress carelessly,

Dress like a fashion plate. Leave needles sticking in chairs and cushions.

Have the backs of their necks clipped.

Refuse to let their husbands have pet dogs in the house.

Drop the mask of charm and fascination as soon as the guesta have gone, and revert to boredom.

Lack trust in their husbanda, and are cleverer than their hus- bands.

Take charge of the income and give their husbands an allowance. Play bridge better than their husbands.

Can't be happy without a lounge lizard" in attendance,

Can't forget a quarrel when it is over.

Refuse to admit that she is growing older.

A Daily Express representative tried to find out what "Englishmen complain of in wives.

It was a curious thing, but every man who was approached replied that be was afraid he had better nct say anything. He would get into trouble." Even Lord Dewar, who is a bachelor, made the same

.excuse.

So there appears to be at any rate one thing right with English wives they do know how to keep their husbands quiet.

HAT AND SCARF SETS.

SOME MORE POINTS ABOUT SUMMER 1929 MILLINERY.

'Hats are "ever so exciting" this year. They may be almost any size you like from a small draped turbas to a crin straw with a wide droop ing brim. Only one thing is neces sary, they must be decorative to be fashionable.

FROCKS AGAIN.

APPLIQUE LEAVES MAKE EXQUISITE TRIMMING.

Trimmings-what a difficult art they represent, there must be just enough and not too much, and that of the right kind. How often is dress marred by the wrong choice of trimming or by the inch too much or too little which destroys the beauty of the whole creation!

·Dress designing must have been easy in the days when lace, jet, and braid were the only possible trim- mings and lace-was just lace,

Felt and straw combinations are very chic. The felt is that very soft angora which drapes as easily as velvet and the straw may be Now-a-days the oddest materials bankok, tage! or, newest of all, are used to add just that touch of Leghorn. Sometimes the straw is destinction which is more than ever used to trim the felt, sometimes rire necessary in the reign of simple versa. The trimming may take the line. Little scraps of metal, glass, forms of a brim and band, of strap-wood, bone, or sheil, feathers, pings on the crown, or of large in-waxed silk, ribbon, velvet, chiffon, sortions. HAT AND SCARF

ENSEMBLE.

The gaily coloured scarf, with hi hai trasmith and buckles to match, is an effective springtime fashion.

One of the latest ideas is the hat Batter puddings are good, if well-and neck kerchief ensemble for early flavoured, and are particularly ap-summer wear. There are a couple of frocks in the Felix Hat Shop, which have a new and exquisite form of trim ming. One is of shell pink geor. gette for evening, the other of two tones of brown crêpe de chine for afternoon.

First the evening dress which is cut with a high waisted effect and a skirt made of pointed tiers which hang to make an uneven hem line. The back view with a double cape swinging from the shoulders is particularly graceful. The orna- ment is in the form of leaves of panne velvet in tones of pink and violet, which are appliqué on the front of the bodice, by means of silver thread. The silver thread 'is also used in a delicate embroidery between the leaves.

The afternoon dress of cocoa brown crepe de chine has a cleverly draped skirt, and fall on the bodice, which show a beige underlining. Velvet leaves, in. a darker and lighter zoned brown, are appliqué on the skirt on either side of the drapery, which half hides them, "with gold thread. The effect is very chie and cleverly avoids being too "dressy."

Another dress with a high waisted effect is of deep wine red crêpe de chine. This has a quaint full collar of pleated beige georgette, which teaches half way to the waist, and is finished with long tie ends falling nearly, to the hem.

FOR THE BEACH.

WHITEAWAY, LAIDLAW's have now in stock a small tent which should solve many bathing problems. It is supported on central folding pole and the whole thing can be easily carried in a small car

The teat which is of striped green, or blue and white canvas, is sun-proof and rain-proof, and quite large enough for bathing or picnicing purposes. It is very easily erected and quite firm when up. The cost is only 875. Fancy silk straws of all sorts are very much used. One type of lace

Downstairs in the same shop I saw straw is trimmed with appliqué a big collection of all wool bathing pieces of printed silk sewn on with gowns for ladies and children "in large decorative stitches Braidings many smart designs and colourings,

of silk straw on hats made of plain coloured silk, stitched like the belts which we were wearing at Christ- mas on georgette frocks, is also much used.

All the above observations were made this week at the Dolly Vardon Hat Shop, from an examination of a large collection of hats which had" just arrived. I have not space to give you any details of a particular Lant, but it is a quite bewilderingly attractive collection, and I am not the only person who has discovered this for I found the shop full of eager

women who were buying almost on sight.

THE ALWYN FOLDER.

The improved Alwyn folder pram which you can get at WHITEAWAY, LAIDLAW's, is in every way a reliable baby carriage. It is strongly made, well sprung und anholstered, and lets down to make a full length bed. The hood has been specially design fed to elimate draughts, and there are various other new features, which make it quite the best folder now on the market.

TENNIS FROCKS.

At THE FELIX HAT SHOP you will ad a very nice selection of tennis for morning frocks in artificial silk. They are cut on good semi-tailored lines and are quite inexpensive. There are also some nico "odd' skirts of pleated crepe de chine in white and several colours, made on waist band so that they can be worn, according to the latest fashion, over the blouse.
