U.S. LINERS TO GO “WET."-
BID TO REGAIN TRAFFIC.
REGISTERED UNDER NEW FLAG?
The Daily Express understands. that the American liner Leviathan, the second largest vessel in the world, and ten other Atlantic liners which have hitherto down the American dag, will shartly resume the sale of alcohol on board, unless legal difficulties arise in New York.
The eleven vessels were recently sold for more than £3,000,000 by the American Government to a_group of American financiers. The re opening of the liners bars is un- derstood to be one of the "reforms" which the new pwners wish to in- traduce.
Loss of Revenue. While the vessels were under the but I've never had greater énjoy-control of the Leited States Gov. ment out of it than in flying at low ernment they sailed across the altitudes and hedge-hopping, Atlantic"dry" in accordance with across country in the Pterodactyl the American Prohibition law. This You really felt you were flying." caused a loss of passenger traffic
and a
consequent decrease revenue.
Yeovil (U.P.).-Back a million again on the score of noise the years to the Mesozoic period when Pterodactyl bas a great Advantage Was peopled with those over airplanes driven by tractor weird flying monsters, the feather-propellers. I've done a small bit less Pterodactyls, science has now of dying at one time or another, gone in the latest attempt to solve the problem of safe flight. Whether the full solution has been reached is still a question but certain it is that a wholly new form of airplane has been designed and down, and which, it is said, promises in the Dext decade to relegate to the scrap heap the majority of the pre sent type of airplane.
Ho Danger of "Stalling." Capt. Hi said that tests bad shown that the machine would ships an descend -"Pancake" - from height at an angle of-40 degrees to the perpendicular, the wing sur face remaining all the while on an even keel

The new owners wish to run their a business basis. They aayhape. by re-opening the bars, to attract those American tourists who have hitherto chosen to travel in "web" British vessels.
This new type of airplane known as the "Pterodactyl, has been developing many years under the direction of Capt. GT. R. Hill, late of the Royal, Air Force. Dur "It will do this," Ec said, "withi ing the last three years Capt. Hill out any danger of a stall. This has been making successful flights means that with any sort of wind. with experimental machines, differ-blowing, as low even as ter or ing in detail, but all embodying the teen miles an hour, the machine same principle of construction; will come to reet on the ground namely a tailleas monoplane wing without any appreciable forward
"pusher driven by a
propeller, run. Even in a dead calm it wil and having a peculiar form of wing come to a stop after a run of only construction that practically elimina dozen yards or goal ates any -stalling sibility of the machine
in the air.
It is this non-stalling feature, it ia id, which makes the new machine safer to handle than any type of airplane that has so far
been constructed.
On a "Magic Carpet." Capt. Hill, who served through the war and has flown nearly every type of machine that has appeared. England since 1914, told the Caited Presa correspondent, that aside from the safety of the new Pterodactyl type of machine, it was immensely more fun to fly than the present tractor type of machine which has the engine and propeller in front of one, instead of behind one as in the Pterodactyl.
The plot and finger Fit side by side in the same cockpit here dual control is fitted. The main 'planes are of Royal Air Force 34 Section, but a new plan form roughly that of a blunt arrow head, has been adopted.. With this wing-form the Centre, of Pres- sure is almost stationary up to large angles of incidence.
The ends of the main planes are fitted with pivoted wing-tips or both as controllers, which net ailerons and elevators. Directional stability is provided by the shape cf the wings, and rudder effect is expanding double produced by flaps situated at the trailing edge of the main planes just inside the controllers."
The new owners of the eleven American vessels are led by Mr. P. Chapman, of New York and Chicago. He has a powerful finan- He cial organisation behind him. has had to experience of liner management, but will retain the United States Liners personnel to assist him in running the vessels.
He is pledged, under his contract. with the American Government, to build two super-liners-of-100) 60,000 tons, and is also considering the question of ficting out, bia vessels with airplanes, to be cata- pulted from the decks, and so save passengers many hours in travelling from port to London or Paris.
The vessels concerned in the

We hope that it will be possible for these vessels to go wet-again." said a director of the United States Shipping Line to a Daily Express representative. "A final decision depends entirely on the legal posi- tion. We have a number of rabid- prohibitionists in America who will do their utmost to stop such a step.
