Prices of cotton yarn have been rising in proportion to the high exchange rate for Hong Kong money. Accordingly to a telegram, stocke are exhausted. at Shanghai and consequently, very little busi- „nese is being done in Canton.

Rice-paper hats, for summer wear, are being made in large quam ities in Kwangtung this year, and, owing to the Japanese Boycott the local industry is enjoying a boom.
The price of gold has risen sharply "in Canton. A week ago the price bad risen to 87.20 às mace, but recently it touched $0.70, but in spite of prices the goldsmiths are beseiged by customers.
The rate of exchange for Hong Kong money continues to rise in Canton and is now 81.50 for 81 Hong Kong The rate for big silver dollars, Shanghai and for eign notes has also gone up. In spite of this a brisk demand con- tinues.

Since the new tariff came into force importation of foreign goods has appreciably decreased by about 43 per cent. This is partly due to the big stocks secured in anti- cipation of the tax increases. Prices have risen and trade is dull. In Government offices and factories no foreign goods are allowed unless such goods are not produced any where in China.
