COLONIAL SECRETARY'S NIGHT OUT.

AT INSTITUTION OF ENGINEERS' AND

SHIPBUILDERS' DINNER.

A WITTY KNOCK AT THE PRESS.

"TO TRAM OR TO 'BUS ?”

Not often can a Colonial Secretary descend from" Olympian heights in public, and less often can such an one, afford to be at all facetious in the presence of the press. In the Hon. Mr." Southorn, however, we have a Colonial Secretary who goes even further and dares a sweetly-spoken "gibe at the local press.

Not only the Colonial Secretary, but many other leading men of the professions in Hong Kong spent a real "' night out " at the acnual dinner of the Institution of Ship Engineers and Ship- builders of Hong Kong last night. Speeches were mainly short but interesting and they were broadcast for the first time.

MR. STOKES UÑABLE TO BE PRESENT.

The many friends of Mr. W. J. Stokes, the President of the In- stitution, will regret to hear that he was still indisposed yesterday and was, in fact, unable to attend the annual dinner. Instead, he sert a copy of a speech which he had intended to deliver and which was read by the Chairman. Mr. L J. Blackthorne..

Mr. Stokes forgot that he is no longer a young man and went for anything he did with a vim and thoroughness that was the envy of all. (Applause.)

"I am sure that you will all join with me in wishing him a speedy return tq health strength. (Hear, hear.)
