VOLUNTEERS COMBINED

LEAGUE.

The Volunteers, with Mitchell as skipper, took on a strongish team from the League at Kowloon yes- terday. The K.C.C. kindly lent the ground. Brace, who skippered the League, found his side weakened by

the absence of Musson and A. -H. Madar, but H. Lim and Hinton, who bas just returned to the Colony, filled their places. I might remark bere that W. Hunt is (quite literal- ly) the nom de guerre of the well- known player W. C. Hung,

14

It was a perfect cricketers' day with a bright sun and cool breeze. The Volunteers won the toss and started with. Hayward and Moor: Disaster came early. Moor, at 14, wis bowled by a beauty from Brace, and with one run, added, Hamson took Fincher smartly at square leg off Baker. Then came an excellent stand. Hayward and Zimmern play. ed excellently, both cutting prettily, and it was not until 69 was scored that Hayward, who had been nearly ran out two balls before, did not get his right foot' across the wicket to book Kelly's short ball, and miss ed it Owen Hughes who succeed- ed, did not seen comfortable and was slower than usual. However, exactly 30 were added when Owen Hughes was 1.b.w, to Weir, and 7 runs later Brace caught Zinomern smartly in the slips off the same bowler for a very pretty 51. (198-5- BI).

Things then did not go so well. At 142 Mitchell was caught at the wicket, trying to cut a straight one from Anderson, and two balls later Bognar returned one to the same bowler. Tiffin was then taken, and immediately after Hunt was caught of his hand in the slips, from Brace's bowling. Divets and Reid then laid on the wood a bit and took things to 187, when the former was finely caught by Lim in the deep off Baker. Reid was badly dropped at deep square leg off the same bowler, but the end came next orez when Baker took a quick chance in the slips off Weir,

The innings lasted a little over two hours and a quarter. The pick of it, of course, was seen when Hayward and Zimmern were to- gether. I thought Brace managed his bowling very well, as he never left anyone on so long that the batsued get thoroughly accus- tome. ́he type of bowling,

Brac id Anderson began the League nings and with scored Brace, played, on to Wales. The

ball spun off the pitch just a shade faster than usual and he was taken by surprise Thereafter Abelson proceeded to clump Wales and Hunt merrily Wales, I fancy, is not quite so good to a left-hander, and Hunt was bowling very short though it must be admitted he had two dif- ficult catches put down in the slips. It looked as if the League were in for a big score when at 66 Abelson played inside one of Plummer's, who had relieved. Hunt, and was taken high up by Owen Hughes. Then a rot set in Parkhurst was bowled by Wales, Anderson edged cae up off Bonnar, and Weir was e and b for a duck. Then Batger was bowled. (69-6-9.) Hinton hit couple of 9's of Bonnar but WB9 bowled thereafter. Baker utterly mistimed his second ball and gave Hunt at silly mid-off a simple chance. (60-8-0.) "Thus 7 wickets had fallen for 10 runs. It måde me feel quite at home.
