Two centuries of history and tradition, dating back to the reign of Peter the Great, were violently disturbed by the reorganisation re- cently of the Russian (now Soviet Union) Academy of Science, with headquarters in Leningrad. The society of immortajs " has at Just adjusted itself to the changed

The hosiery trade has started to book good Spring orders, and the Spring season for broad silks has been very satisfactory. Stocks of the latter are said to be in strong hands and are bringing fair price.

The internal revolution.. in. the Academy WAS accomplished primarily by a liberal admixture of new blood. The membership, for 200 years limited to 40, has now been enlarged to 95, the new places being led by scientists of the younger generation at least one of them is below 40 years of age-and many of them active Soviet work- ers. Quite as important, bowever, is the change in the spirit of the Academy. It will not be, like most Academice of the world (as one member put it) a repository of mummified reputations.
It will instead attempt to merge itself in the life of the wide mases, taking an active. and leading part in the up- building of the country industrially and in raising the cultural stan- dards of the population. The change in attitude is perhaps un- pleasant to the old Academicians, but the new ones, being younger aad in the majority, are certain to │- set the tone of the whole organiza- tion.
