In all, there have been 13 acci. deats, eight of them being fatal and one resulting in serious injury to the occupants of the machine, two resulting in slight injury, and two resulting in no injury, Six, acci- dents were due to stalling, and four of these were fatal, so that the stall remains the most frequent cause of fatal air accidents.

Examination of each of the acci. dents due to stalling shows that in all probability not one of them would have occurred if the machines had been fitted with the Handley Page wing slots.

Misuse of Controls.

One accident was due to rash fying, one to racing one to inex perience in stunting, three to care lessness, and Ont to mechanical failure. The accident due to inex- perience in stunting was caused by the pilot using his controls harshly, sad so throwing his body forward, breaking the safety belt and falling from the machine.

The one due to bad weather of curred during the King's Cup air race, when a competitor hit the side of a bill.

Praise for the absence of engine failures must be mainly bestowed upon the A.D. C. Cirrus engine, with which the vast majority of light aeroplanes are equipped.

In addition to those included in this summary, there have been two accidents to privately owned air- craft while they were being used for commercial purposes One of these, in which the pilot was drown ed, was due undoubtedly to rash fring.

The accidents caused by careless. ness include those which resulted from machines striking obstructions such as walls. telegraph wirce, and

Salutary Enect.

The Prime Minister's desire to promote the most promising of the Conservative back benchers will have a salutary effect on the in- terest these young men take in the party and in polities. Many of them had already decided to retire from parliamentary life, because they saw no chance of ever doing anything. Colonel Moore-Brabazon and others have gone back to the City, because they were not given any opportunity of showing their talent in the House.

Recent Ministerial appointments have done a great deal to restore faith to the younger men that the party leaders mean to use them,

No seat has yet been found for Sir Laming Worthington-Evans, who is leaving Colchester at the general election. It is probable that one of the City members may have a peerage in the next two or three months, in which event Sir Laming will be first favourite for the can. didature.

HUNTER'S FEAR FOR HIS

PYTHONS:

BAIL REFUSED IN A THREATS CHARGE.

VANISHING WIFE,

A sword stick and a bowie knife, both with leather sheaths with straps, were produced by the police at Highgate Police Court, "when Thomas H. Saill, aged forty-seven, described as a big game hunter, remanded in custody on charges of threatening to do bodily harm to his two brothers-in-law at a house at Litchfield-grore, Finch- ley, and damaging windows at the house.

ng

Saill asked that he should be re- leased on bail" in order that he could, feed his alligatora, pythons, and other wild animals which he kept at Wembley. His application was refused.

Mr. Cecil Smith; a Canadian farmer, said that Saill had been separated from his wife for three weeks, and he thought that his wife was at the house at Litchfield- grove. Saill called there between 10 and 10.30 on Christmas Eve, and when he and his brother told him that his wife was not there be said that he would stay until he sw her or he would mash up the house. He produced a sword stick from a sheath which he was hold- ing behind him and said that he would run it through them

Mr. Smith alleged that Saill had broken nearly every pane of "glass in the house,

"Family Affair"

Suill denied that he threatened his brothers-in-law with the sword stick, and said that it was all a

was a war correspondent and cara- paigner, and he had the sword stick with him during the Boer. war and the late war.

He kept the knife strapped to his wrist in case of accident when attending to his wild animals, and also to cut up their food. If the animals were not fed at midday they would die, his business would go, and his wife and eight children would suffer. He had to show the animals in a few days.

The magistrate suggested that the police could attend to the animals, but Saill.said that this would not do because they had to be attended to skilfully and their temperatures taken..
