Army golfers, indeed, were rather the amazing list of things hunted
in and around Shanghai, hardly treated, for they had this strange tee sprung on them with out any warning for their meeting, and in addition faced a strong wind which made the hole a terribly long 3. It is a little early to express any final opinion on the hole as it now stands, as the tee has been in play for such a short time, but it is quite clear that bad shots are going to have very little chance of finding the green and staying there. One of the chief merits of the change is that it introduces an en
tirely new brand of short hole on the Old Course, so that now all the fire possible one-shotters in the round call for a different type of shot. Regulation 3's at the th are always going to be difficult, but I do not think unjustifiably difficult, with the back tee in use, and when the course is stretched to its full length, as it was over the week end, a good acore was not by any means such an easy matter as it has been for some time past.
+
In connection with improvements to the Old Course at FanEng I raised the question some time ago. of providing an adequate car from all the tees so that the topped drive would not run almost as far as the well-hit shot, and give the player in most cases a compara tively easy chance of getting the right figures in spite of everything. That is definitely the most import ant improvement that the course needs at present. In addition to this, there are one or two of the greens which are not all that could be desired. This is especially the case with the 4th green where, however good the drive, the second ehot has to be played over the horizon with only part of the pin visible.
THE HONG KONG DAILY PRESS.
This latest addition was made during the China New Year holl days when Mr. O, M. Springfeld, Master of the Hounds, took them with him up country towards Soo- chow to the Nine Arch Bridge in the direction of Tahu Lake. On one puting the hounds started off in full cry and ten minates standing on a hill close at hand, later, Mr. Springfield, who was surprised, to see a huge por- cupine dash past at high speed, its The hounds were all in close pur- quils rattling furiously as it ran. suit, with a savage cry very rarely heard in the chase of other naimals.

EFFECT OF THE SINO- JAPANESE TENSION.
[FROM CUE CHINESE CORRESPONDEST:
Prices for cotton yarn of various sizes and colours have boomed of late and according to dealers the prices will continue to go up for some time. Canton yarns are now being imported into Canton mainly from Shanghai. Prior to the anti- Japanese boycott, the Japanese pro- duct dominated the Canton market because of its cheapness. But with the inauguration of the boycott practically all the Japanese supply was stopped and the demands was theh saplied at a somewhat higher price by Chinese manufacturers in Shanghai and other cities in north and central China. Towards the close of the last Chinese New Year the eatisfactory progress of the Sino-Japanese diplomatic negotiations led to a general hope that all outstanding questions would be settled and that. the Boycott would be lifted. In consequence merchants began to slacken their orders on Shanghai.
When negotiations, were broken. off the merchants found their siderable rise in prices CANTON MONEY MARKET. AFTERMATH OF NEW YEAR.
[FROM OUR CHINESE CORRESPONDENT]
CANTON, Feb. 25th. Owing to an musually heavy de- mend, the value of Hong Kong money has been, soaring and over. the week-end was up to $1.39 local silver. The value of Central Bank of China notes has also increased... the rate of exchange at the money changers being $1,014 silver to 81,000 notes. This is a record for the Bank of China notes, which were particularly in demand for New Year settlements The mer chants declared it was merely a matter of the greater convenience of the notes, but the fact that spurious 20-cent coins are dirculat ing freely is effecting the situation. The boom in Hong Kong cur rency, a usual feature of this parti.
cular season of the year, is due to the fact that Canton merchants are seeking to replenish their stocks of the Colony's currency,
A curious fact is the minor boom in Hong Kong five cent pieces, bat this springs purely from a social pustom, These deminutive coins are & popular new year gift to the children of Canton. So been hea. been the demand that as much 'na 20 or even 130 cents premium was being paid for a dollar's worth of 5-cent pieces.
