ANXIETY.

London, January 2nd:-Oxford and Cambridge have now made some headway with their centenary Bost-race practice, and at the have both bad out a couple of eights it is to be presumed they have now taken stock of all, or nearly all, the material available. Progress, however, is not yet ob- vious to the castal observer, and will not be for some time yet The vexed question of the strokes, for instance, is still in the melting pot and it is impossible to attempt to predict who will be the rival lesders on the great day.

The position with regard to this all-important question of stroking is, indeed, exceptionally interest ing for Oxford and Cambridge would appear to have at least three men to select from. As far as the Dark Blues are concerned, the Etonian. A. Graham, is a first Favourite, but J. D. Lyle, an old Shrewsbury paraman, who owed No. 1 in one of the trial sights, is being given a good trial. Should either of them fail to come up to expectations, then the president, H. G. Morphett, will lead the crew himself.

Swivel Enwiseks, - Morphett is an Australian, and has had some experience of swivel rowlocks, with which he has itted out the Dark Blues, and there is na doubt he would not hesitate to stroke if he did not feel that he could be more use in the middle of | the boat, either at No. 4 or No. 8. It was Morphett Oxford called on to stroke last year when Llewellyn was indisposed, and there are many good judges who would have liked him to remain there. He basi difficult problem to settle..

Turning to Cambridge, those who are in the best position to know Pare still doubtful about the whole affair. Some still take the view that the main struggle is to come between J. G. H. Lander, who bas stroked Firat Trinity to the head- ship of the of the river and in the Olympic Regatta, and the young Etonian, T. A Brocklebank, but the unexpected inclusion of BJ Elles, the successful 1927 stroke, has upset all calculations, especial ly as he is unquestionably rowing much better than he was last year. The fact that for the first week of practice the leadership was en- trusted to the giant J. B. Collins is not regarded as being at all significant, as the others were in- cluded in his crew. Collins is an carsman with a natural" length, and is just the sort of man to get #crew together strong enough to stand the strain which this race entails. While he can be regarded as a reserve stroke in case of an emergency, Cambridge are hardly in a positon to do without him at No. 8.
