OPERATION ON LION.

COURT REDUCES DOCTOR'S FEE

The Appeal Court of Nancy has been called upon to decide whether i a surgeon is entitled to demand a fee' of ' 15,000 francs (123) for operating upon a lion. The sur- geon, Dr. Denier, was called upon to extract a bullet from Sultan, the står turn of a German travelling circus, who had been shot when he tried to maul his trainer.

1.

The operation was dangerous fan it was impossible, to give the lion full amsthetic. He wan drivon to a corner of the cage, | secured to the bars, and the opera- tion successfully performed under a local anesthetic.

The circus proprietor claimed that the whole affair had been arranged by his publicity manager for the benefit of the doctor's re- putation. Dr. Denier wrote a brochure afterwards, My opera tion in the lion's den," and bene- Sted by the attention it aroused. In any ass the lion had died. shortly after the operation.

The Court of Appeal decided that every one had benefited by the publicity, so they cut down the fee to 10,000 frases (£80).

about it.

Much interest is, centred on the appearance in the Open Doubles of Major Lucas and Dr. Tottenham to-day against H. Lo and In Tak Cheuk. The pait, who will in all probability win, are regarded as the strongest British combination and one of the best couples in the event, so that their performance will naturally attract attention.

Lim Peng Chin and A. H. Rum- jahn, a University, couple, are down to meet Henderson and Cornaby, A good match is expected. Four Chinese are engaged in the third Open Doubles match.'

S. E. Green makes his initial appearance this year in the Open Champion ip this afternoon and plays Isomura in the Singles. The latter will no doubt give the ex champion an excellent match, and some fine play should be seen. M K. Lo meets Ng Sze Cheung in the same event and will probably win.
