Business in the Kwangsi has not been good during the past year and was particularly bad in Wuchow. The merchants of Wuchow are of the opinion that there are four factors which may be held responsible the difference it exchange rates, the boycott of Japanese goods, high rents,

and the disastrous fire at Liyehow. While rapid strides have admittedly been made in reconstruction and industrial enterprise on the part of the Government, it appears that very few merchants have cleared anything like their usual profits.

The difference in exchange rates has come near to causing trade paralysis in many business houses in Wuchow. At the present rate about $1.82 Kwangsi coins go to the Hong Kong dollar, while a Kwang tung dollar is worth 81.40 OF Kwangsi money. A big dollar' (Mex) is exchanged for $1.2. SAD DEATH OF LABOUR

LEADER.

INQUEST DISCLOSURES BY

HIS SON.

Disclosures concerning the death of Mr. Benjamin Charles Spoor, M.P, aged fifty, who was found dead in bed at the Regent Palace Hotel, were made at a Westminster inquest.

The boycott of Japanese goods has bit Wachow, formerly one of the big distributing areas of cheap goods from Japan, very hard, since, in order not to lose customers the merebants have had to 'import similar wares from other more ex- pensive sources.

The high rents are directly due, it is said, to the reconstruction work. The modern buildings which Mr. Alec Spoor, a son, of Mount have been built on the new streets road, Wallasey, Cheshire, said that are not only expensive to rent but bis father had been drinking several thousand dollars are de- heavily, and was confined in a num manded as deposit. money. As business in Wuchow is to a large extent dependent upon Liu- chow and other towns in the interior of Kwangs the fire there has caused considerable losses. Many Wuchow merchants had branch stores in Liu- chow and it appears that the mer- chants of the river port had to bear about two-thirds of the losses due to the burning down of the business part of Liuchow.
