SEVERE SENTENCES OF CANTON COURT.

RIGOURS OF THE ANTI- JAPANESE BOYCOTT.

{TROY QUE CHINESE CORRESPONDENT.)

CANTON, January 29th. Sentences of two and a half years' hard labour have been imposed, by the Special Canton City Court, on four Chinese, Tse Shang, Wan Tak Yung, Ou Tak Chiu and Ei Kam Tsing for trying to smuggle what were described as Japanese goods into the city.

The four men were apprehended same time age by one of the Boy- cott pickets, detained by the police and brought to trial.

On being convicted of violating the rules and regulations of the Beycots Committee the prisoners were denounced by the Court as

selish reactionaries, ready to sell their birthrights for a mess of pottage. The Court added: "You are greedy, unpatriotic men, who have no scruple in trying to amass wealth by illegal means." In ad" dition to their imprisonment. they are to have all their property con- fiscated and to be deprived of their rights as citizens of the Republic of China fer, five years.

The Boycott Committee has made an announcement to the effect that it hopes that the severity of these sentences will act as a deterrent to all would-be smugglers during this "rigid boycott period."
