During the last eight years, quotations have been fluctuating from $3 to $4.00 per bag, top prices being reached during the war, but subsequently dropped down to from 83 to 83.20 per bag. The present quotation is about $3.40 per bag, with an upward tendency.

AMERICAN CONSUMPTION OF SILK.

DECEMBER "STATISTICS SHOW DOWNWARD TREND."

The December silk statistics of the New York market indicate that the tendency of import and con- sumption was downward.

During December the United States imported 44,128 balds of silk, inclusive of 39,742 bales from Japan, 563 bales from Europe, and 3,822 bales from other countries, which was a decrease of 4,006 bafes na com- pared with the import in December a year before. The consumption in December totalled 45,026 | bales, which was also a decline of 2,883 bales from a year before. It is in... dicated that the consumption figure includes 38,877 bales of Japanese silk, 410 bales of European silk, and 5,739 bales of miscellaneous silk.

The stock of wilk in New York market on January 1st tofilled. 48,808 bales, including 42,811 bales of Japanese silk, 905 bales of Euro- pean silk, and 8,198 bales of mis- cellaneous silk. The combined 2.60 figure showed a drop of 898 bales. Es compared with December laty 1928, when it amounted to 49,808 bales.
