INFLUENCE
The silver market during 1928 may be said to have been marking Trade in cotton yarn on the sad time, says a Home paper to hand of December 31st, and unless any instant, improved and prices show-alteration is made to-day the price ed a notable increase. Quotations will be the same as that at which of the metal at the end of the year were as follow:-
it opened on January 2nd-98 7:16d. Fluctuations have been within the range of 9 13-184, the lowest price having been 28 1-16d., touched in January and again in September. while the highest level of the year was the 283d. recorded in May last. The steadiness of the market during the past year has been main- ly due to the Chinese demand for silver, caused by the disturbances in that country which prevailed during the first eight or nine months,

Future Outlook. ·
The future of the metal would seem to depend very largely upon China, as that is the only country of any importance now having a silver currency standard.
The announcement in 1898 of dard caused silver to slump to 24 d. India's adoption of the gold stan-
per ounce, and but for the excep- tional Chinese demand during the past two years the price might have gone to a low level record.. The lowest price ever reached by the Per metal was 21 11-16d on November Picul. 27th, 1002, while the high record is 811.55 Bold, touched on February 11th,
9.40
1820, this latter price being due to 9.54
the exceptional demands caused by the war.
Whether Chinese demands in the future will be sufficient to absorb the increasing output of the metal is doubtful, and the outlook for silver is certainly obscure, a point which should be borne in mind by holders of silver mining companies" shares.
