CANTON COTTON YARN MARKET.
A cable from Shanghai stated that the price for cotton yarn and dropped one thel per bale. The cotton yarn market in Canton. owing to scarcity of stock showed a slightly advance. Quotations for the No. 42 yarns have increased by 83 per bale, while for No. 18 and others. prices have decreased one or "two dollars a bale.

The adverse balance of imports over all exports is £353,000,000. The figure for 1997 was £389,000,000, and for 1926 it was £162,000,000.
The actual total of imports in 1928 was £1,196,000,000, while cx. ports amounted to £793,000,000 and re-exports to £120,000,000.

On the whole the yield has been above the average. As regards the districts south of Mukden, the crops
are larger in amount than usual, but the quality is somewhat inferior owing to the delay in the fruiting process and harvesting caused by the unfavourable weather. The sams applies to some districts north of Mukden, where frequent frosts and snow during the antutan delay. ed the harvesting time. Along the Chengchiatun-Taoman-Tunglino rail- ways the late-sown crops had hardly time to ripen, while their quantity too is below the average. In North Manchuria, on the other hand, emps were abundant and of good quality.

The greater part of the difference between exports and imports is, of course, balanced by what are term ed invisible exporte, the chief elements in the calculation of which are earnings of British ship- Ping and interest on investments abroad.
There was a notable increase in the exports of artificial silk, the value of which rose to £5,725,000.
Among the exports which show decreases are coal (£8,500,000), iron and steel (£2,500,000) and cotton goods (£3,500,000).

LAST YEAR'S TONNAGE.
That things are improving in the industrial North of England is shown by the fact that the total tonnage of vessels entering the docks at Liverpool and Birkenhead dur- ing the past year was 13,246,121 tons, the greatest tonnage ever dealt with except in 1997, when enormous quantities of foreign coal were im-
ported during the coal strike.
This was one of the statements made by Mr. Richard D. Holt, Chairman of the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board, when presunting the accounts at the annual meeting in December.
He stated that the revenue from rates and dues, the main revEĽUS of the Board, remains at the same figure as that of last year, apart from the abnormal revenue due to importations of coal. This was not unsatisfactory when it was realised that one single item, raw cotton, showed a falling-off of £42,000 on imports and of £3,000 on exports. the total amount imported falling from 658,834 tons to 433,371 tonk As stocks held in Liverpool declined during the year from 1,291,730 to 757,910 bales, the reduction in im porta did not indicate any corres Per

In the Annual Report of the Liverpool Organisation, which deais with industrial and other trade developments in the city, it is stated that, during the past twelve months, 4.15 ten now industrial enterprises have been established in Liverpool.. In some cases there are also large cx- tensions of existing businesses. Premises which were vacant at the beginning of the year are now being used for such purposes as cold- storage insulation, the manufacture of pork slabs, motor-body building, and the manufacture of refrigeral- ing machinery. The largest ti- smelting works in the-country has bear established in Bootle, and at Aintree two large factories, one for the production of tin boxes, enamel. ware, etc., and the other for the manufacture of all classes of gal- vamard ware, are at the present 7.20 moment being erected.
