CHATER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND.

The Secretary of the Chater. Com (mittee has forwarded us the follow- ing complete list to date of sub- scriptions to the Chater Memorial Sebolarships Fund, the total amount- ing to $43,700. The purpose of this Fund is to establish," in memory, of i the late Sir Paul Chater, C.M.O. scholarships at Hong Kong Univer sity, open to competition, without distinction sex or rare, by the. children of parents domiciled in Hong Kong, provided that such parents are unable, without the aid of a scholarship, to send their child- ren to the University.
As the subscription list will short- ly be closed. those who desire to contribute are asked to send their cheques as soon as possible to the Hon. Treasurer, Mr. C. 1. Cookes, c/o the Hong Kong and Shanghai | Banking Corporation.

The Chinese are extremely skilful carvers and their ivory work is know the world over. This industry is mostly carried on in Canton and much of the output is sent here for transhipment to Europe and America. The volume of business done in a year used to amount to about two million dollars, of which about 80 per cent, was for America and 20 per cent, for Europe. But! during the last two years there has been a big decline and business has been reduced to in insignificant figure. This was owing to the com- petition of Japanese ivory but their work is inferior to that of the Chinese. The factor in their favour, however, is cheapness and they bare captured a large portion of the America market. The local market Java Consolidated
