AN ARTIST'S CANDID CRITICISM.

The Annual Exhibition of the Hong Kong Art Club opened. yesterday on the top floor of Fedder Building and can be visited to-day between the hours of 10.30.4m. and 7 pm.

The are nearly 200 exhibits and the show is perhaps the most interesting that has been given for many years on account of the work of several new members and the inclusion of photographs, wood sculpture and arts and crafts.

A Mixed Bunch. Dr. Balean has a mixed bunch:

The members of the Club are mass It was a very difficult subject and of them amateurs, and it is a is not entirely successful, but the curious fact that the work of non- | vigour "and freshness with which professional artists is generally pre-it has been tackled, and the atmos ferred by the average person. No better collection of Hong Kong views could be found anywhere by the person who wants a memento either for themselves or a friend. So many different points of view are given expression. Thore are many people, not themselves artists, who, while they are sufficiently educated to appreciate the beauty of, for example, a Monet, yet prefer a sketch of far less artistic merit! which shows some favourite view as they themselves saw it, and not translated into terms of exquisite technique, or the impression of an ether very different mind. Here on the walls of Pedder Building, are pictures of all sorts, and though they differ as widely as Mr. Hunt's decorative pen sketches at one ex treme, and Mrs. MacNair's impres aions in oil at the other, they are all animated by the same spirit, which professionalism is apt to crush, of painting for the sake of preserving the beauty which de lights them.

The Growth Of The Artists. One of the most interesting things about this annual exhibition, from the point of view of the artist, is its growth. Not the growth of membership or of the number of sketches exhibited but the artistic growth of the members themselves. The writer has had the pleasure of reviewing this exhibition for three years in succession, and the ex-

one really exquisite little pencil drawing of a Chinese girl's head (which he has not numbered, a habit of Dr. Ralean's when he has something really good to give us), and two oil colours. One a sunset, was a very difficult subject but something of the wonder which the artist saw has been transferred to his canvas. Mrs. Balcan has five small oils which are marred by a certain timidity but show & sense of composition.

At the conclusion of the dinner Dr. Joao Magalhaes, Colonial Secretary at Maeno, proposed His Excellency's health and expressed the hope that Senhor Barbosa would long continue to guide the
