ARTIFICIAL SILK AND

PIECE GOODS.

There has been an improvement in the demand for artificial silk, the bulk of the orders sent to China and Japan being from Australia and Canada. The better quality taffeta, for which Japan is famous is chiefly sought after and there is a continued demand for various types. of silk and artificial silk mixtures, Demand for cotton and artificial silk velvet, remain at à fairly high level.

Hong Kong is taking small lots of striped thirtings and fancies from Europe, as the Japanese goods are now being boycotted. Business is, however, spramodio.

Woollen. piece goods are being sold at much reduced price in Hong Kong This is owing to the large stock available in the Colony, It is expected that prices will still go lower at the approach of the Chinese New Year, as dealers will have to turn their goods into cash in order to meet their obligations...

SCIENTISTS' DISCOVERY IN

GUIANA

HUMMING BIRD'S «CLUE,

A humming bird busily building its nest in British Guiana nine years ago set a party of British scientists, engaged at the time in pioneer and development work, on a traju of research which has re- sulted in the discovery of a fibrous material similar to cotton and capable of production in this coun- try at little more than half the price.

and

Mr. C. J. Hedley-Thornton, an analytical and research chemist and Chairman of the English Ar. tificial Cotton Production Marketing Corporation, Ltd.: which is to make the new cotton, described how it was discovered.

"We found," he stated, "that; the bird

was using . fibrous material with an unusual lustre which it obtained by stripping the stem of a certain weed, dipping the strippings in a pool, where we found that they were chemically treated, and allowing them to dry

It has taken us eight years to discover which of the 87 species of the weed the bird was using, and the chemical treatment to which was subjected. Several acres of the weed are now under suficient to ensure an output of cultivation in Essex and Sussex

It will be no mere coincidence if of fibre on July 1st next year."

Mr. Hedley-Thornton explained tremendous growth and increasingly large ap-

While Coolidge economy" was being advertised throughout the country there was no apparent disposition to reduce appropria tion for Hoover and his Depart ment. With the funds placed at hia disposal Hoover, created machinery designed quickly to put foreign purchasers or agents direct ly in touch with American manu- facturers,

Under the caption What the World Wants, Hoover caused to be issued regularly from the De partment of Commeres à mimeo graphed pamphlet which listed bundreds of potential buyers of American products. The informa- tion was made available to manu- facturers throughout the United States. A typical copy described particular openings in 3 different countries, each article identified by a key number to which American manufacturers would refer in seek- ing further information.

This voluminous and regular in- formation, representing scores of valuable tips on potential new foreign business, was sent to the 70 district offices of the Depart meut as well as to the manufac turers. In addition, the district offices were given the names and addresses of each potential pur chaser or agent. This enabled manufacturers in any district to obtain complete information by telephone within a few minutes and to dispatch a cable or letter with- in an hour la quest of new busi- ness in foreign markets.

Food: clothing, automobiles, musical instruments, electrical fit tings for automobiles, and ecores of other products have figured i this service maintained by Hoover as Secretary of Commerce. No means exists for accurately estimat ing the amount of actual business developed by this effort to bring foreign purchasers and American manufacturers directly in touch with each other through medium of a Government Depart ment. Dr. Julius Klein, an econo- mist formerly of Harvard Univer- sity and with wide experience abroad, has direct charge of this service which is part of the Depart ment's Bureau of Foreign and Domestic Commerce.
