RESERVOIR MURDER MYSTERY.

DAIRYMAID KILLED BY BLOW ON THE HEAD.

LOCKED MANHOLE RIDDLE.

WHITEHAVEN-

The murder of Sarah Jane Corlett, a pretty nineteen-year-old dairymaid who was found in an underground reservoir a month after her mysterious disappearance, was revealed at the opening of the in- quest to be one of the most remark- able and sensational crimes of recent.yeras.

Medical evidence proved that the girl was killed by a blow which fractured her skull after she had left her employer's farm on the dark and foggy night when she vanish-

ed.

She was dead when she was forced through a manhole into the thirteen-¦ fees deep water of the reservoir.

"Top Of A Hi.

The reservoir is on the top of hill nearly half a mile from a road, and the approach to it is across swampy felds. It is almost incred- ible that a girl would voluntarily make her way to the spot after dark,

LONDON, NOV. 1 Miss Tallulah Bankhead, the famous actress, is to be married to Count Anthony de Bosdari, so is engaged in business in the Cityzm to 7 pm.

It is expected that the wedding St. Peter's Y.M. Club, Dance, will take place as soon as the run of Her Cardboard Lover, the Lane, Crawford's, 8 p.m. to mid

night. play in which Miss Bankhead now appearing, is finished,

A clog and a blood-stained strip from a camisole are clues which may bring the murderer to justice. The rlog was found near the girl. It may have been used to strike the blow which killed her. neck.

Her murderer had to remove a five-stone wrought iron hatch, securely clamped by a crossbar fastened with bolts, to push her feet downwards through the 22-inch aperture into the subterranean re- servoir.

The hatch was replaced, and when it was examined two days after the girl's disappearance there was not thing to show that it had ever been moved. Only the fast that the re- servoir was drained yesterday for the first time in two and a half years for cleaning revealed the crime.

Shingled Girl,

Sarah Corlett, who was a fair, shingle-haired girl, had been em- ployed as a dairymaid for two years by Mr. Robert Gili, of Arlecdon Farm.

She left the house at some time between 7and 7.20 on the evening of Tuesday, October 10th, to call at her father's home a mile away to fetch a pair of clogs which were being repaired. From that moment all trace of her was lost.

Mr. John Corlett, her father. stated at the inpest that he waited for hours in his house, but that his daughter never arrived.

Definite proof that the girl had been murdered was given by Dr. Henderson, the police surgeon, who had made a post-mortem examina tion." He said that, the indications were that the girl had been in the water for about a month.

"I must at least have some sort of holiday for my honeymoon," said Miss Bankhead to a Dany Empress representative, yesterday, "Therefore if Her Cardboard Lover is still running at Christ-3 mas time we shall try to steal three days away from London. We shall get married on Christmas Eve-=88 | far as present arrangemente go-- and then I all come back to re- sume my work at the theatre.

There is no present intention that I should give up my stage career after my marriage. It sim- ply means, so far as work is. con- cerned, that when I am married I shall be able to pick and choose the parts in which I appear.

Met Three Months Ago. "We have known each other for about three months. We have been unofficially engaged for two months.

"We hoped that we could have quiet, almost secret, wedding, but we found that was impossible, as so many people knew of our in- tentions and wanted to come to our wedding.

One of Miss Bankhead's great regrets is that her father, Senator Bankhead, who was re-elected for -United Alabama in the recent States election, will not be able to be present at her wedding.

Count Boadari, who is twenty- eight years of age. is connected with some of the oldest families in Italy and is a British subject by naturalisation.
