PREDECESSORS."
ENORMOUS CROWDS LOOK OVER THE NEW HOTEL.
The Peninsula Hotel was formally opened yesterday afternoon by His Excellency the Officer Administering the Government (the Hon. Mr. W. T. Southors, C.M.G.), who made a stirring speech on the courage and foresight of the organisation which had called it into being.
The Peninsula Hotel was. His Excellency said, a worthy successor to that earliest of Hong Kong's big buildings, the City Hall, and to all the solid and imposing structures which had since aprung up in Victoria as proof of the belief in the future great- ness of the Colony, despite strikes and the disturbances in China.
Ha drew a glowing picture of the future of Kowloon when visitors who had booked from Calnis to. Kowloon, would find there' not baly a fine and growing city but an hotel the equal of any in the world.
The Hotel was thronged with visitors who were permitted to wander at will and see for themselves all its wanders, and there were exclamations of surprise and admiration to be heard on every, side Refreshments were served both on the first and sixth floors and several gentlemen were acea to be availing themselves of the services of the newly opened barbers' shop.
Among the many prominent local residents present it was pleas ing to see Sir Henry and Lady Pollock, the former looking in good health after the trying experience which has kept him from public life for many, weeks.

It has often struck me that Hong Kong affords a striking example of the courage and optimism of our predecessors. If there is one thing more than another which strikes a newcomer to Hong Kong, it is the size, the solidity and the boldness of so many of our buildings. Our predecessors were men who saw visions and dreamed dreams, or they could nevar in the sixties have.con. ceived the idea, for instance, of the City Hall, which must in its day have been che of the finest civil many years development was main- buildings East of Suez.
