MODERN DRESS OF WOMAN.
ARCHITECTS. PRAISE.
SIGNIFICANT SIGNS OF THE TIMES.
Under the title of "Signs of the times" Mr. "H. Ansell delivered an address on modern tendencies. in architectural design at a meeting of the Architectural Association, at Bedford Square, London, W.C.
The war, he said, had changed our outlook and left us in a state of mind which inclined us to put everything to the test and take no- thing for granted. Among the bene Ats that the after-war years have brought was the emancipation of woman from the thraldom of super- finous and inconvenient clothing
The modern girl in the simpli city and efficiency of her attire, the freedom and beauty of her dress," he said. "is a walking lesson to all architects. She has had the courage not only to, shed unneces sary trimmings but to alter govers- ing principles of design.
The modern girl's dress is an example of fitness for purpose, TCS- pect for the inherent qualities of

Another significant sign of the times was the discovery of architec- ture-as good copy" by the press. "The trend of line in our own days has resulted in a demand for buildings which are as peculiarly the product of this age as were the Greek temple, the Roman bath, the mediaval church of theirs. Charing Cross bridge on the north. side would. Mr. Ansell said, make it almost impossible for a fine architectural effect to be obtained. Architectural co-operation should be secured at the earliest moment,
otherwise in a few years we might b lamenting one more missed.op- portunity, one more failure of the controllers of London's develop- ment to imagine the fascinating thing such development might be.
In the field of ferro-concrete design I see no reason why England should not take a very high place," he said. In the hands of wome European architects. ferro-concrete forins are often eccentric, exaggerat ed. personal, ephemeral in origin. The English sanity and cool level- headed character are peculiarly adapted for the establishment of, ferro-concrete as dignified building material and an inspiration of de sign as vital and adventurous an anyone may, desire.
"I and I ΙΣΤΟ an unabashed nationalist in matters architectural. quite out of sympathy" with the art knows no boundaries' theory. I like boundaries in art. There is much pleasure to be gained in noting the nationa! character in any country, and I should be devoutly sorry to see these differences dis-
appear.
The main attack on the beauty
of our countryside, our villages and towne does not come from the lack of restraint or the surplus vitality of our architects Rather does it lie in that public inertia which, ignoring the architect, permits a vast amount of building to be done with no definite character other than
apathetic and futile picturesque
