ST. ANDREW'S BALL.

EDINBURGH CASTLE AND A. SCOTTISH GLEN.

LAST NIGHT'S BRILLIANT FUNCTION.

OVER A THOUSAND POT PLANTS USED IN

DECORATIONS.

GREETINGS BY WIRE.

St. Andrew's Day Was celebrated yesterday in Hong Kong by, the usual functions. The Chieftain of the local St. Andrew's Society (the Hon. Mr. C. Gardan Mackie) accompanied by mem bers of the Society laid a wreath on the Cenotaph in the morningi, and in the evening the annual St Andrew's Ball was held in the City Hall.

The scheme of decoration was even more striking" than usual, and was due to "the genius of Mr. George Duncan, M.B.E., ag- diated by a willing band of helpers. The front of the City Hall had been converted into a likeness of Edinburgh Castle, by means of a matshed erection similar to that used to such good, effect during the Grand Tattoo. A searchlight on either side of the Castle threw it into brilliant relief while another stream of light poured from the gate way which was decorated with palmas and ferns. Above the gate way was the Shield of the Chieftain's Clan."

The Clae Shields which formed a great part of the interior decoration of both dancing and supper halls were all newly made this year under the direction of Mr. Duncan who had taken parti cular, care as to the correctness of the quarterings, designs and

colours.

Supper was served in the Theatre Royal, the official party being accommodated on the stage which had been converted for the hight into a representation of a Scottish glen which has a particular, significance for the Chieftain and Mrs. Mackie.

There were over a thousand guests among whom were noticed. three couples whose weddings have been celebrated lately-The Master of Napier and the Hon. Mrs. Napier, Bill and Mrs. Wright, and Dr. and Mrs. Durras.

"BRITHER SCOTS" OUT EAST.

Many telegrams were sent and received to Brither Scots" in other places, and "although many of the guests could not claim the bonour of Scots birth. it was essentially a gathering of the Claas. and a general spirit of good will and fraternity made the bati go with a swing from start to finish...

His Excellency the Officer Administering the Government (the Hon. Mr. W. T. Soutborn, C.3.0.) and Mrs. Southorn were pre- sent and were formally-received-by-the-Chieftain (the Hon. M C. Gordon S. Mackie) His Excellency led out the Chieftain's wife in the official lancers.

Oncial Supper Party. The official supper party was held on the stage of the Theatre Royal. which had been transformed for the night into a Scottish Glen. In the background, could be scen the Gannoche Bridge as Edzell, with the water rushing between the rocks of solitude. A pretty com- pliment to the Chieftain and bis wife who paid their vows at this spot. Other scenery belonging to the theatre, and palms and pot plants, had been cleverly arranged to further the illusion of being in a glen. The table was of horse shoe shape with an extra leg down the middle, and the party was as follows:-
