At the opening of the proceed. inga, the charge was altered to one of piracy on the high seas, as evi- dence had been obtained that the alleged attack WAS пой within British waters.

Mr. Charles J. Thompson, Senior Boarding Officer at the Harbour Office in evidence said that on November 9th he went with the complainant and two other Chinese to the spot where the complainant said that the attack took place. The party were aboard the Government tug zu Sing, and at a point

South-west, west of Lantuo Island they dropped anchor: Witness took bearings of the spot and, marked the place with a red buoy. The owner of the watch admitted that the article was somewhat pre- cariously secured to his pocket by a clip, which brought the remark from his Worship to the effect that to carry a watch in such a manner was simply asking for trouble.

SEAMEN IN ADMIRALTY- PROUD BOAST "BY TWO CHINESE

Two Chinese seamen of HMS. Tamar were before Mr. E. W. Hamilton at the Kowloon Magis tracy yesterday for behaving in a disorderly manner and being drunk at Public Square, Yaumati..

The defendants were accused at

the time and place in question by an Indian constable of staring at him rudely, and when reprimanded, the two men suggested the matter should be settled at the Police Station. There they subsequently became disorderly and refused, to give their names.

Addressing his Worship, one of the seamen loudly proclaimed that they were seamen of His Majesty's Navy, and asked to be excused The defendants were stated to have good characters.

His Worship said that he did not want to send them to prison but warned them sharply against dis respectful behaviour towards police officers and discharged them with a caution. In doing so his Worship remarked that they had more sense, he supposed, than to stare at a Petty Officer. He knew what would happen if they did!"

FAILURES FOR LARGE SUMS, Sir Oliver Lodge,

In the Bankruptcy Court yester- day before the Chief Justice (Sir Heary Gollan) so application for's recission order was granted in the caso of the Kwong Lee Store.

The application was made by Mr. Agassiz who said that liabili- ties were $117,000. Before the mat- ter went into his hands a power of attorney was given to four com- pradores and a dividend of 30 per cout, was paid. The book debts were colected but the petitioning creditor was left out of the distri bution assets and he took the matter to Court but he had since been paid his 30 per cent.

The Chief Justice agreed with a comment of the Official Receiver a the irregularity of the whole proce-

dure.

He disliked giving his sanction to something which was highly ire gular, although in the present case no harm seemed to have been done. The order would be granted but it was not to be regarded as a prece- dent.

quite clear. There are people who are afflicted casionally, no kind of religious be with suicidal tendencies; and, pe lief, or even knowledge, is suficient to stem that tendency. But to say that a study of Spiritualism in any way contributes to or induces such a tendency is false and mis- lending.

Mr. Agassiz said that the debtor aled his petition in April and a meeting of creditors resolved that an application for the recission of the receiving order should be made. Out of assets of only $2,700, Ices, had to be paid, leaving $2,564. Liabilities totalled $37,000 and the book debts were bad and could not be collested,

The order was granted.

The Official Receiver said that the assets were $5,169 and liabilities totalled in all 8380,000. He under stood that it had been held, but not adopted as a hard and fast rule, that the proportion of assets to Eabilities should be ten per cent.
