What would have been a most in- tereating and 'well contested match at Chatham Rond on Saturday was completely spoiled-by some mort régreitable incidents in the closing stages The Queen's had establish ed a winning "lead of four goals to two when the Athletic defence re sorted to some very unfair tactics, with the result that tempers were completely lost and matters came to exchanged blows a head when a player on each side The Athletic team surrounded the referee and refused to take any further part in the game, and the proceedings therefore terminated zome ten minutes before the final whistle should have gone. HOME FOOTBALL RESULTS.

FITTEST SURVIVE IN THE FIRST DIVISION.

POOR SCORING AND NARROW VICTORIES.

ENGLAND DEFEAT WALES.

A feature of the League football matches at Home on Saturday" was the absence of high scoring in the First Division, where eight feams had to figħt hard for full points in odd-goal victories Of the rest, Liverpool, at home, had the highest score with s 3-4 victory over Bolton's Sheffield Wednesday (away) beat Leeds United 20; and the only drawn game, which was a pointless one, was between Cardiff City and Buddersfield Town. Total goals scored amounted to 21, of which home teams claimed 12.

But for a narrow victory gained by Derby County over Manchester United, the former would have had to sacrifice premier place to Sheffield Wednesday, who are now close behind them. "Blackburn drop to third place owing to their defeat by Aston Villa. Bury once more were in-strong form, and beat the Arsenal by the only goal of the match.

Second Division matches fitched high scores for home teams, and they gained gight victories, visitors being able to win only once. Notts County, the leaders, ware not seriously extended by Blackpool. Hull City had things their own way with Bristol City, and, as in the case of the First Division, they ousted Chelses, who were defented by Millwall, from the second position. The.

Saints retain their old place although they were obliged to share the points by dividing four goals with Bradford.

Swindon came back into their stride again by defeating the " Southern section leaders, Luton, who still retain their place, with Plymouth and. Queen's Park Rangers close on their heels North- ampton had to abandon fourth position to Coventry,

In the Northern section, Wrexham, Bradford City, and Stock- port-who bead the list-all won their matches, the last-named Accounting for Darlington by seven goals to three. The victory of the leaders, however, was a narrow one, and their two rivali are following closely on even terms.

The Scottish Rangers remain unconquered, Hearts and Aber- deen, their close rivals, each dropped a useful point. Motherwell. met a similar fate. Coltic emulated the Rangers' (cut by netting four goals without reply from Clyde.

The international match played at Swansea between Wales and England was not favoured with good weather. A gate of. 14,000 saw Wales beaten by the odd goal in five:
