THE POPE AS HE IS WIFE'S APPEAL TO QUEEN

TO-DAY.

AN AUDIENCÉ AT THE · VATICAN.

VIVID NARRATIVE OF A

VISITOR.

From a personal impression I have just gained during an audience of the Pope (writes a correspondent of the Sunday Dispatch). I am able to dispel the rumours, which have caused anxiety among millions of Roman Catholics in this and other countries, that the health of the Pentif is causing alarm in Vatican

circles.

It is true that as he gave the Benediction in the magnificent ball of audience he spoke in a subdued and seemingly tired voice, but he looked well and appeared to carry lightly his 71 years. I was struck by his strong and alert face, which seemed to combine the characteris ties of the basiness-like man of action with the dignity of the 7.47 spiritual leader. His appearance rather the physical suggested strength and vigour that was his in earlier days when he was zu enthusastic Alpinist

Intolerable conditions led him to desert, but after ten days of liberty he was .recaptured by the French, and handed over to the Spanish authorities."

He declared in letters to his wife

that he received cruel treatment. For nearly two years he was kept a prisoner without trial;

Mrs. Ogden, immediately after bis recapture, set to work to secure For a period during August the her husband's release. Desertion Pardon.

She believes that it was chiefly an account of the intervention of the Queen of Spain that the young Engiisampa was pardoned the offence af desertion, beastead of being sent back to England he was ordered to return to the Legion and serve until July 1928, when his time expires.

His wife is convinced that his life is at stake. Photographs which he sent her a few days ago show that the ordeal be has passed through

ment of the Papal Guard....

Nothing ever comes of all these appeals," said Mrs. Ogden to a Daily Express representative yester. a batch of official letters,

Soon we some 30 of us by nowday, as she fingered

were led into the audience chamber, nobile oblong hall with tapestried. walls and ceiling rich in gilt and oil paintings with a gilded throne en a dais at the end.

Women's Emotion.

Almut one o'clock un excited official-all Italian officials are ex- eited-told us to stand up, and profound hush fell as he declaimed All karel." Then without any de monstration a figure entered, cloth- ed entirely in white, attended by two cardinals, or mcnsignori, in red, and other priests, and follow ed by two big Papal guards in erested helmets-Pope Pius XI., the man whom millions of Christians believe to be God's representative on earth. infallible, on whom is founded His Church and to whom are entrusted the keys of the King- dom of Heaven.

A portly man of middle height not looking his age, he walked slow- ly round the room, each of us kiss ing the ring on his-left hand. was the fourth he approached, and made the mistake of not lifting his hand to my lips, so that the ring merely brusted them. Some kissed the ring ardently, others "pecked" at it and some did not really kia it at all. Some of the women were

so deeply impressed that they could not restrain "their emotion.

4:

Madonna-Like, Girl.

I shall not readily forget the face of one of the peasante, a pretty girl of about 18. After she had kissed the ring she looked up after the Pope, her dark eyes shining. and laughed in a kind of ecstasy, though I think she was very near to tears. She looked really beauti- ful and Madonna-like. When he had gone round the room the Pontiff took his stand in front of the throne, said a few words in Latin, to which the kneeling cardinnig made nasal-responses, and then gave the benediction with thumb and two fingers extended, but in such a soft voice that. although I was only six feet from him I only heard the two conclud-.. ing words, spiritus sanctus.”

Then without further ceremony we passed out of the room back to

lifelong imprisonment for since 1870, when the. Church and State in Italy. were separated, no. Pope has left the Vatican.

The case of Alex. Ogden seems to have become entangled in official red-tape.

Mrs. Ogden has offered to buy her husband's release, if the price de manded by the Spanish authorities is not too heavy. She is selling her Weymouth-street, Mary- lehone, at the end of the year to raise funds to continue her fight to

houst

recover her husband.
