The autumn training period lasts only for six weeks, and with the general uncertainty of the weather it is difficult enough to fit in every practice and firing that must be carried out by each ship. Every Friday each squadron, fotilla, or independent vessel sends in tenta tive proposals for movements and exercises for the coming week, which are co-ordinated by the staff into

pro- gramme. And since things so seldom go wrong, this careful pre- iminary werk is apt to be, over- looked by the casual onlooker.
