CAN WE SET THE WORLD IN ORDER?"
INSPIRING ADDRESS FROM MAUDE" ROYDEN.
AN AGE OF AMIABLE INCOMPETENCE.
LAWS OF THE UNIVERSE WHICH
ره
MUST BE UNDERSTOOD.
The first public lecture given in Hong Kong by Miss Maude Royden yesterday in the Theatre Royal was attended by a very, large number of people, and the audience was deeply impressed by the inspiration and commonsense of her address.
To the question Can we set the world in order!" she gave the answer in no compromising terms that we could if we would study the laws which govern the spiritual world, as scientists have studied those of nature, and obey them.
The Dean of Hong Kong, who was in the chair, referred to the address as "one and a half hours of tremendous trutà, sanity and good sense."
On the platform were representatives of neatly all the Protest- ant Churches of Hong Kong.
J
After the address Miss Royden answered questions pat to her by the audience with reference to what she had said.

With a very satisfactory entry of 50 ponies for the next meeting of the Macao Race Club, which is to take place at Macao on Sunday, November 4th, I have no doubt
shall see some very interesting racing. Quite ready response has been met with from Hong Kong where despite the fact that the Hong Kong Jockey Club have a meeting which is advertised to take place on the 10th of the month, local owners have combined to show in a convincing manner their readi- uess to support the neighbouring club by sending over thirty-four ponies for the meeting..

The whole of our mastery over nature was based absolutely on the reliability of its liwe. We could not prove these laws but had to take them on faith though as far as we can understand them we can trust them. If we could realise that the same God is the God of both the material and the spiritual world we should take a step for- ward in the solution of our human problems.

Our descendants would look back on this age as politically one of amiable incompetence, but 149 a' time of stupendous power over natural science. Floods, typhoons, earthquakes and drought have been faced in a spirit of faith and truly majestic power. The attitude not only of scientists but of the or dinary man towards these problems is amazing.
