Dr. A. C. Headlam, Bishop of Gloucester, president of the Church Congress, held recently in Chelten ham, in a letter to Lord Halifax, the veteran Anglo-Catholic leader, denounced the attitude of 700 or 500 Anglo-Catholic clergymen who demanded in an open letter to the bishop that Dr. H. D. A. Major, principal af Ripon Hall, Oxford, should not be allowed to address the congress.
WHY HE DESERTED.
SOLDIER'S STORY OF POVERTY AT HOME.
Private George Martin, of the Sad North Staffordshire Regiment, told a pathetic story sickness and poverty when he wax tried for desertion by court-martialat Alms Barracks, Blackdown, near. Alder- shot.
He told the court that on reaching his home at Nottingham on fur lough he found his father dying from consumption and his mother Besides nourishment required for just recovering from confinement. his parents, there were five young mouths to feed and only a few shillings coming into the home for the whole family.
When he saw the misery at home. he decided that it was his duty to do something for them. He had a young wife to keep as well. He decided to stay behind and get work at an iron foundry.
"I intended to return later to my regiment. I did not get rid of my military kit. It was the sad conditions at home that made me do what I have done," he said.
Although sympathy was expressed for the man, the court had alternative but to find him guilty. Sentence was to be promulgated in due course.

we are compelled by Christian orthodoxy to believe is not only that our Lord was a com plete man, but also that He had
Dr. Major, a leading Modernist, was down to speak at the congress on "The Anglican Interpretation of the Christian Faith." The Angle Catholic clergy, in their.let- ter. to the Bishop of Gloucester, made accuations against Dr. Majar which the bishop declares ampant to a charge of heresy.
The bishop, while stating that he does not often agree with "Dr.
a complete human intellect. What Major, declares that the writers of the implications of this may be, the letter to him have had them and how it is related to His divine personality, present the most difi- selves
the charge ofcult problems. There are just as open to grievously slandering their neigh many who write on this subject who bour." He states that, on a pre-appear to deny our Lord's full vious inquiry he found Dr. Major human nature is there are who sp- to be "transparently honest," and Pear to deny His divinity. concludes with this striking pro nouncement:
Now let me turn to Da Major. This is not the fret- occasion that I have been asked to examine his
opinions. Some years ago, when I was Regius Professor of Divinity, I was asked to inquire into an ac cusation of heresy made against bim on the subject of resurrection.
The result of denying free dis cussion is twofold. On the one side it means that we have no oppor- tunity of having our own opinions criticised and of discovering how much error there may be in them, and we shall find ourselves teaching I read a long statement of his On the other belief. It was transparently honest. what is not true. hand it that one He had, anything, over-stated

open discussion can give good grounds of its faith.
"I believe that the body of clergy to whom your lordship with great chivalry has given the sup- port of your name are really an- xious to defend the truth, but I can assure them, and I speak with some knowledge, that their method of doing so by refusing a hearing to those who differ from them and by avoiding oper discussion would, if followed, bring the Christian faith into contempt.

"I often do not agree with Dr. Major. I dislike the tendency he shows to build up what may be call- ed an unorthodox orthodoxy; I think sometimes he is nearly as dogmatic as his opponents: some of his language is precarious; but
have found no evidence that he does not really believe in the truth of the Incarnation.
The document before us begins
with a reference to the treatment
Referring to the letter demand. of the Athanasian Creed in the Re- ing Dr. Major's exclusion, the gather that the House of Convoca vised Prayer-book, from which I bishop writes:-
ру
I offered, s the most con- siderate and courteous thing that I could do, to meet those who pre- sented this letter to me, but my offer was refused. I was informed that the matter is not one which, as it seems to us, admits of discus- sion, nor can any representations even from your lordship make us nequiesce in any action such as that' which appears to have influenced those responsible for the arrange- ment of the congress."
"From this I gather that the clergy in question are so certain of the correctness of their opinion that they demand its acceptance by the Church without criticism or dis- cuasion. venture to think that Ithose who write in that way have shown themselves unfit to deal with such subjects, and I address myself to your lordship as one for whom I have a moat profound respec", even when I differ from you.
"The accusation, if it has any meaning, is one of heresy, and that is, I conceive, 'a most serious charge.
I remember once investigating a similar charge made against the present Bishop of Durham, and I found that the extracts were treat- ed in such a way as to make it difficult to believe that they had been honestly made.
"If we look back in history we shall see that the passion for coa- demning others for heresy is a dan gerous one.
We have new problems before us the question of the human knowledge and consciousness of our Lord-and the problem is one of extreme difficulty-one on which I always speak with the greatest hesitation..........
(Continued on sexi Column),
ion and the National Assembly are, equally with Dr. Major, sub- ject to the suspicion of, unsound teaching.
"Denials of Modernism." Then comes the following series of propositions:-
It (Modernism) denied the re- surrection of the flesh and the trustworthy character of Jewish apocalyptic pictures, portraying the future history of humanity on this planet, and the end of the world; it denied the penal charic- ter of Christ's sufferings and that He offered on the Cross a pro- pitiation or satisfaction to God the Father, it denied our Lord's omniscience and omnipotence while subject to the conditions of His incarnate life; it denied His Virgin Birth and physical Resur- rection and Ascension; it denied that there was any, specific apos tolic authority for the monar- chical episcopate, it denied that the gift of tongues bestowed the power to speak foreign languages, it denied the evidential value of miracles, and that they were capable of attesting a divine re- relation; it denied Biblical and ecclesiastical infallibility.
"With some of those statements I disagree, some I should express differently, but I think that the majority of them are held by most intelligent Church people at the present time.
I would say something in par- ticular about one point-the Virgin Birth. I do not believe that the reasons for denying it are adequate, but at the present time the doctrine of the Virgin Birth causes great. difficulty to many carnest and de- vout Christiane whom you would recognise as loyal Churchmen, and it would not be possible to condemn all such as heretical"
