Cavalry are indispensable. These are some of the conclusions of military experts. who watebed the operations. They were also im pressed by the remarkable feats ac complished by motor-coaches in transporting masses of infantry at high speed.
Startling discoveries have follow ed the manœuvres of the Aldershot Command which closed with the
Battle of Billingshurat." Four important facts are acknow ledged by military observers and
umpires:-
Cavalry are indispensable: The myth of mounted troops being obsolete has been exploded by the patrol, outpost, and scout work done by the King's Dragoon Guarda, the 13/18th Hussars and the 17/21st Lancers.
Tanks are no longer a menace: The new anti-tank" gun, which penetrates their armour at eight hundred yards and at an angle of 45 degrees, robs them of effec tiveness except in amail skir mishes.
Airplanes are practically use- less for observing in close coun- try: The air units of both armies were able to give only meagre de tails of the movement of troops. Motor-coaches are the most efficient means of transporting infantry: Troops were moved swiftly and noiselessly, and it re- quired not more than fifteen coaches to transport a battalion..
Possible Changes. These four revelations may bring About drastic changes in the pre- Army policy. Interest in. cavalry has been rekindled and be- lief in tanks has been shaken.

The 11th Hussars are under- going mechanisation now, and twenty-ton "hush-hush" great tanks are being tested at Alder, shot. This programme is losing popularity.

Gilkes tried to dissuade her, but she flew into a temper and declared she would go off there and then. Be lost his temper and stabbed her with a pocket knife, inflicting app. deep but not a dangerous wound. He afterwards put his head in a
gas over, but was rescued.
Mr. Roome, prosecuting, said that Gilkes had written six letters, Eve to friends and one to the coroner, saying he intended to com- mit suicide. He attempted to ex- cuse his wife, and said it was his
fault for not trying to under- stand her better. There were three children.
Mr. Justice Humphreys said that many cases at the Old Bailey were referred to as "sad," but Gilkes's was truly a pathetic story. Ad- dressing Gilkes, he said:
You are as decent and respec- table. a citizen as any in this court or out of it. You have been in the Post Office for 25 years, and you served your coun- try in the war.
Then came the trouble brought upon you by the conduct of your wife. I am favourably impresa ed by your letters in which you tried all you could to find excuses for her. It was a right and manly thing to do.
I shall not send you to prison. You have good friends and there. is reason to suppose you will be re-employed in the public service. I shall bind you over and I hope your future life will be happier than your last few years have been.

Value Of Horses.
"Horses are as important to the mechanical army as men," a senior officer said: "They will always be used in advance of main bodies. They are easily concealed, they can cover any type of ordinary rountry where fighting is likely to take place, and they are practically the only means of feeling out the

One of the regulations laid down during the maneuvres limited the infantry to fifteen marching miles a day. This was done because the bulk of the British Army-Reser- vists and Territorials-would have to go into action in new equipment -and brand new boots.
Cavalry
restricted were twenty-five miles and nechanical transport was unlimited.
During an outflanking movement of Westland's army, which failed early to-day, four thousand troops were taken nearly a hundred miler few in motor coaches within a hours. The capture of a despatch rider bearing written orders re- vealed the scheme to Eastland, who were able to meet the surprise at tack just in time..
Stockholm is wondering whether the Prince will be brought before one of the Courts, as he had no car licence, being only sixteen years old, and no other member of the Royal Family save the King is im- mune from legal prosecution.

The dying boy, when being car- ried to a neighbouring house, exclaimed:-"Give my re- gards to the Prince and tell him it was my fault as I grabbed the wheel.'" The boy's elder brother declares that he beard this remark. Inquiries into the accident are proceeding.
