The general cargo returns for the 24 hours ended at 0 a.m. yesterday showed heavy decrease on the pre- vious day, especially, the. through freights Local Imports were about average, with a fair contribution by British vessels.

Nine vessela discharged a total of 9.438 tons for Hong Kong of which five British ships contributed 1,879 tons. The two best returns were from the 3.3. Prominent (Nor-¦. wegian) with 2,729 tons of rice from Bangkok: and the s.s. Deli Maru (Japanese) with 2,010 tons of cement and alchol.

Steamship

The master of the s.s. Hai Ding (British), Capt. E. Walker, which arrived yesterday from Foochow and Swatow reports that between Foochow and Swatow they passed a wrecked fishing junk-in Lat. 92 56 N., Long. 118 33 E. and res-- cued five Chinese fishermen who were clinging to the wreckage. They were taken aboard and landed at Swatow on September 28th.

H.M.S. Cumberland" Arrives.

H.M.S. Cumberland arrived in port to-day: from Weihaivei, but it is understood that other warships will not be returning here from the "KARMALA North for some time to come.

**JEYPORE" "MALWA New "City" Liner Arrives. FASHMIR" The sa. City of Khios which | "NALDERA" arrived yesterday was making her

"MANTHA first visit to this port. She was from Dunkirk and Singapore_with" 960 tons of general cargo for Hong Kong and 3,868 tons of through freight including 138 cases of chemicals. The Bank Line, Ltd. are the local agents for this vessel.

She was built in 1923 under the name of Hydal Hall by Messrs. Barclay Currie & Co., Ltd., Glas-"KEYBER" gow for the Ellerman Hall Lias,' who later changed the name to the City of Khios. She has a register: ed tonnage (nett) of 3,351 tons, and steam engines which develop 2,390 h.p. Her dimensions are:-Length 400 feet, Beam 55 feet and Depth 23.7 feet. Captain A. S. Reay is in command with a British crew of 18 and an Asiatic crew numbering 30. The vessel carried 136 cases of chemicals.

second defendant whe was in Court returned A plea of not guilty. He said that the other de fendant and he were unloading straw and hay for the Jockey Club Stables at Causeway Bay and there fore were entitled to stay in the Shelter until such work had been completed.

The Magistrate reviewed the ordinance and replied that al though it was permissible for junks. to mark passengers or load cargo, and vice versa, the boat must be moored to a jetty or wharf.

Lance-Sergt. Delahunty who made the arrests said that the boatmen were not at a wharf but were un- loading the cargo at the praya front.

The defendant replied that the few, wharres that were in the Shelter were privately owned and it was usual for them to discharge their cargo on the praya front and go away.

The Magistrate decided that there was no case against the two de fendants,
