THE HONG KONG DAILY PRESS, SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 29th, 1928.
KONG RACING.
FIRST HALF OF PRESENT SEASON REVIEWED. ITEMS OF INTEREST.
[BY EARLY BIRD."]
Racing will be resumed in earnest next week end, with the two days meeting of the Hong Kong Jockey Club opening on Saturday, October 6th, and continuing on Monday, October 9th. Race followers have been kept away from the sport for some time and the resumption will be welcomed."
...
Quite a number of ponies who raced at the Annual Meeting have been resting during the summer months at Shanghai and with the exception of Rozing Eve, San Francisco and toas Bay, who were amongst the last to make the trip to the north none of the others has so far returned.
Several old ponies have changed hands since the last extra meeting. Perpetual Motion has been acquired by Mr. Hynes and Mackie's stable. Warlordship will have as owners Mr. Percy Tester and Mr. Abrahams Tarzın and Tarmażaciam, will carry the colours of Mr. E. H. E. Priestley. The Duke of artaguna will race for Mr. Alves. Bright Prospect, One Third, and Chemal are now, the property of Mr. Loo, the successful owner from Macao, who I hear is off for a trip up north to acquire new ponies. May which was in Mr. Loo's stable, along with Little Darling will for the future sport the colours of Mrs. B. H. Charles who, I believe, is the latest addition to Hong Kong's owners Full Moon now betoaga to Mr. O. Kitchell who started the first half of last season rather successfully with Zin which was acquired by Mr. Macartney, but has since been destroyed. Shingle will represent this enthusiastic owner and jockey, who has de- signs on the remaining "extras." Mr. G. U. da Rozi in the new owner of Sea Front, while Lieutenant Dangerfield is the proud possessor of Lye Green.
Mr. Ho Kom Tong is evidently intent on carrying off the honours of our next big racing season as he has a number of very useful performers who have been resting up north since the big. meeting. Daring his last visit to Shanghai he became the posses80- of quite a string of griffins and purchased a good looker by the name of My Own which has been renamed Rose Hall and will be started at the next meeting. Dr. Beidy has a new pony in Blue World which, I believe, was purchased in Tientsin. G. U. da Roza has a likely looking customer in Nerspar which I have no doubt will acquit himself" very creditably at the October meet- ing.
Bengal, fordie, Battle Eve, Espoir, Grande del Norte, Ben Hur, San Diego, Bing Bay, Loch Tummel, King of the Plains. Yuen Sin, Brown Jug, Ukelele, Madiern, and Peter are some of the names we shall not see again as they have gone where all good ponies go, and if there is a hereafter for these courageous battlers. hope the grazing will be good and plenty, and the carrots ae fresh and sweet as it is possible to procure, for these splendid little animals have offered us many wonderful hours of exhilarating sport.
The Stewards of the Hong Kong Jockey Club deserve great credit for their compilation of events during the first half of the In most cases ponies performed according present racing season.
te expectations and in spite of adverse criticism in the case of some of the penalised contender; I am of the opinion that the Handicapper should be proud of the results. Handicap races were the popular tis bits of each propramme submitted during the senson under review and I have every reason to believe they will remain, so providing ponies are not expected to carry too much weight. The public like to see good horses win instead of being crushed out of races with overwhelming burdens.
SUBSCRIPTION GRIFFINS.
Subscription Grifin events provided some very thrilling and interesting racing and with but a few exceptions I have not the slightest doubt that owners were satisfied with the return they re- ceived for money expended. Dumphries renamed Mongolia Stay was the outstanding performer in this class, with Fretwhile, Tarzan and O'Moon following in that order."
RECORDS.
Two noteworthy performances occurred during the first half of the season. The first was established by Mr. F. Dunbar's Ellint Buy (Mr. Maitland up) who won The Champion Stakes (1 miles) in the record time of 2 minutes 32.4-5 seconds. At the 3rd Extra Meeting Sir Victor Bassoon's Boring Eve (Mr. Charles up) ran away with the Junk Plate (seven furlongs) finishing easy in the record time of 3 minute 46.4-5. seconda.
SUCCESSFUL JOCKEYS.
I have included in this list below all the winning riders in Hong Kong and Matao since the 1st January, 1928.

Mr. T. L. Wong is at the head of the jockey list with 19 wins, 23 acconds and 16 thirds out of43 starts.
Mr. R. H. Charles, who has considerable difficulty these days. in making the weight, is No. 2 on the list with 16 wins 11 seconds and 10 thirds out of 43 starts. As Charles is getting on in years
eonsider this is a proud record.
Mr. A. F; Clark has atendily mounted the list and is running in 3rd place with 11 wins 12 seconds and a thirds out of 31 starts. Mr. Benny Proulx, although he only succeeded in breaking his duck at the big meeting, is already out of the novice class.
All the other riders are doing as well as possible with the mounts at their disposal and I am pleased to see that the Stewards have decided to give our novice riders a chance at the next meeting by instituting a race for novices each day. I trust they will make a feature of this innovation at each meeting for the future as the novice does not get much chance when he has to compete with experienced jockeys in the all togethers."
