GROWTH OF GREATER LONDON:
GREAT INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT.
One of the most remarkable indus trial "developments ever known in England is taking place with 'amaz ing swiftness on the Middlesex side of London.
There, in a line of country from Acton the London, County boundary to beyond Slough, in Bucks, now productive works are being born every week.
་
It is estimated by the local authorities in those areas that the number of factory workers between Acton and Slough is now 150,000 men and women. Five years ago the figure was less than 80,000.
Special trains for the workers run. each day by the Great Western Railway from London to Acton, Greenford, Southall, Hayes und Slough for the many who cannot find homes near their em ployment
Tube Extension Plan
A proposal has been put forward by the town councils of Acton and Ealing for extending the Central London Tube" Railway over the Great Western lines to Greenford and back to London vid North Actor to provide a quick service. of electric trains to meet the needs of the growing factory area. This proposition, is being considered by the directors of the two railway companies.
Four chief centres are concerned with this manufacturing extension Acton, Southall Hayes and Slaugh. There is subsidiary development at Greenford,
The range of manufacturing in these four districts is extraordinary. It varies from motor-omnibuses to chocolates and soap,
Acton now has eighty separate factories and works, apart from its laundries-the town does the wash- ing of London. Seventeen thousand Actoa factory workers will receive wages next Saturday. Three years ago the number was 7,000.
METROPOLITAN POLICE.^
SENSATION.
TWO CONSTABLES GET.. 18 MONTHS.
..
THE HELENADERE BASE RESULT.
LONDON, Hept. 14th, Constables William Clayton and Charles Victor Steven have been found guilty at the Old Bailey and sentenced to 18 months imprison ment each in the second, division for making a false charge against | a woman named Helen Adele
Mr. Justice Humphreys, suID ming up the constables' case, said that foul perjury had been com mitted on one side or the other. He disagreed with the contention of counsel for the defence that a verdict af guilty would a verdict of condemnation the whole Metropolitan Police force. On the other hand, such pertlict would show that members force had in the interests public succeeded in briu justice two men unworthy members of it. He had muc pity than blame for the gir
case,
Counsel for the prosecutio Percival, Clarke, dwelt an portance of the case to the police force and suggeste Clayton decided to arrest, t and save himself and Stovent ed him up..
Sir Curtis Bennett, K., ing, said, It has been sn that the constables are per and get the public to suckr" that nobody dare say them

SEAMEN'S LEADER AND EXPELLED UNION.
BRISTOL. Though Mr. Havelock Wilson, nion leader, was the seamen's lying in bed, crippled by rheu- matism, when I saw him there was still the same indomitable spirit of the old warhorse in his rejoinder to the Trades Union Congres deci- sion to expel his union, writes & correspondent to the Daily Mail.
Asked what the effect of the deci- sion would be, his reply was: "It will have no effect, or rather, judg ing from the results last November, when our disaffiliation was recom-
the union,
Land Valus Rise. Between the factory districts of Acton Vale and North Acton an entirely new residential township of East Acton has grown up. Five years ago there were not more than 300 people living in East Acton; to-day there are 15,000, all in re cently constructed houses. The value of land for shop premises hasmended, I should say it will benefit Mr. Havelock Wilson jumped in three years from £10 a added: foot frontage to £50 and more.
At North Acton number of factories are being built and plan. ned as an addition to this industrial settlement. The daily number of workers at North Acton is about 7,000. It was 100 a few years ago." Southall's growth is a romance. It has as many, factory workers as & prosperous town in the midlands. There is one motor works at Southall with 5,000 men on its pay- roll
ㄗˋ
Hayes, stretching its factory line along the Great Western Railway, is never idle or silent. It works day and night' as the capital of the gramophone industry and the home of a hundred other factories.
" - Advantages. "' "Twelve thousand people come into this town to work every day from outside areas," said the clerk to the urban council of Hayes. "That is quite apart from the thou- sands of workers who are living here. The development has been magical. It is because we are ou a main railway line, and have also the advantage of water transport by canal."
A separate factory centre has es- tablished itself on the site of the old military transport depot at Slough. The number of firms, hay ing works there" is 110, and each month that number is growing
More than 6,000 workpeople are employed at these Slough factories. Firo years ago there were only a few hundred. There are four branch banks, restaurants for the workers, and an emergency hospital.
Housing to meet the demands of the Slough workers is marching out into the Bucks countryside. Iver- three years ago a rural hamlet-is now a town with a large population and a railway station of its own.
We anticipate," said an official of the local authority," that in less than ten years this industrial side
That recommendation brought an increase of 30,000 members, an increase of income of £5,000, and a saving.of.£2,000 a year in affiliation foes and delegates' expenses. If the new decision is equally good in effect we ought to shake hands with ourselves.
On the other hand seamen and trade unionists in general will look on the Trades Union Con- gress ruling with alarm, disgust and distrust, because it means that the movement has been sold to adventurers who are seeking to use the Labour movement for their own political aggrandise-
ment.
The T.U.C. overlooks the fact that millious of workers have their own opinions of the kind of politics they want. There is one union affiliated to the Con- grees with 185,000 members: Ac cording to their own returns only the 30,000 are subscribing to political fund. Surely it is clear that more than 100,000 of the members are non-politicians. And what can be said of that union can, be said of the majority of unions.
Though the Trades Union Con- grese was supposed to be fighting the Communist Party to death, Mr. Havelock Wilson suggested that the seamen were being expelled to satisfy that section.
