A GLIMPSE IN LANE, CRAW. FORD'S WARDROBE.
Ornament has never been put to better use than in the 1999 evening mode. Every touch of ornamenta- tion has a definite bearing on the line of the dress and there is in- consequence nothing superfluous or exaggerated.
Looking through Lane, Craw ford's new collection I noticed the very definite tendency to stress the right hand side of the gown and was struck by the elegent simplicity of the new modes.
There is, for example, a frock of black silk lace on which the pattern

FLOWER GARDEN CRETONNES.
The new furnishing fabrics are really an unfair temptation. They are so beautiful as to almost take your breath away, and you long to dress your favourite room in one of them even if the present cretonn or jaspe is still good. I came down in the lift from the furnishing department of Whiteaway, Laid- law's the other day with a lady whom I did not know, but despite English convention we turned to each other and spoke almost in the "I had to Come saine words... away," she said, or I should have bought some, and I don't need it # bit."

cularly appealing. There is the wisteria and sunflower design, for example, which takes me back to a well loved country vicarage. It can be had on several different grounds, but the flowers are always painted in their natural lovely tones. The designs are bold and realistic, another flower cretorne has a big blue vase with a true English garden bouquet in it back- ed with autumn leaves and creepers; the ground in this case is pale green, and I believe they have it in other colours.
I saw another, single width this time, cretonne on an apple green ground against which bloomed a sheaf of red and blue herbaceous border flowers. That sounds, per haps, startling but it is not, so in the original at all,
For all and any of these cretonnes the well known Whiteaway suite has been designed. I aaw one in the showroom of which one end of the settee had been left uncovered to show the workmanship inside which is responsible for the comfort and the excellent service given by these suites. I have myself watch- ed every stage of the making but it may interest you to see what it is makes your chair so satisfactory.

Blankets are already necessary on chilly nights and the wise house wife will look over her store now and buy what is necessary before the winter really comes. There is no need to recommend the Early- warm" blankets stocked by WRITE AWAY LAIDLAW's though you may not have yet tried the de luze kind of the softest anogra faish- with satin bound edges.
Every bride ought to have at least one pair of these.
MADAMZ SARRAULT has returned from Paris with a wonderful collec tion of gowns and hats which are on view in her salon from to-day.
IN THE DOLLY VARDON HAT SHor I found some charming two-piece sports suits. They are made of close kais silk and wool mixture in a wide range of colours, Some of the coats have collars and cuffs of a different colour, but most of them rely on the interesting sur- face, tucks, buttons and cut for The cut in all cases is excellent, the jackets being made on exactly the same lines a the new tailor mades.
