SOUTHAMPTON, August 31st. Sir Sefton Brancker, Director of Civil Aviation, held an inquiry tonight into the complaints by residents near Hamble aerodrome, Eve miles from Southampton, at low flying over their houses!
The inquiry followed the crash of Miss Bessie Grace yesterday into a flagstaff in the garden of the house of Mr. M. Findlay Smith
The inquiry was attended by six people who signed a petition to the Air Ministry, including Mr. Find lay Smith, at whoer House it was held. Others present included: re- presentatives of the Hampshire Light Aeroplane Club and Messrs A. V. Hoe & Co.
Sir Sefton Bruncker said that the aerodrome was a private one owned by Messrs. A. V. Roe & Co. and used by them, the Hampshire Light Aeroplane Club, and by the R.A.F. when they desired. He

The Air Ministry's sole respon- sibility is to license the piner ag an aerodrome: If the people object to the noise, I am afraid' they will have to grin and bear it; just as people living by the side of the road have to put up with the noise of motor traffic. The aerodrome is in the Ministry's opinion perfectly safe and that is the end to their responsibility

Sir Sefton Brancker: That is ex tremely dangerous and if there is 'n fatal accident. I am not sure you will not be liable to a charge of manslaughter.
Dr. Cunningham Brown said not all the residents were concerned in the petition. He had no objection to the aerodrome club and he did not consider their flying a nuisance
Sir Sefton Brancker said he would give the matter, his con- sideration and would communicate with them when he had reached a decision.
Mr. Findlay Smith said:
I fixed the pole to stop low fly: ing over my house about three months ago. could not get i up in time for the air pageant, 20 I put up a temporary one then. The mast, which is about 30ft. high, is painted white above A certain beight and on top is a white and blue flag. I am reG- ponsible for the lives of the people, under my roof and this protection was necessary.
I have consulted a solicitor and. he says the earth beneath and the air above my house are my property.

Dr. Lamprell admitted that be did not take steps to see that the instrument was working properly Death was due to asphyxia; caused by spasms of the larynx and cellulitis venenata, and the action of the chloroform which caused the spasms. It was not the chloroform which went into the stomach which caused death.
