LONDON, September 1st. It is always curious, to note as the month of August comes round "empty" London becomes. Of course, it is a misnomer to speak so of the world's biggest city. seeing that there are still five or six millions in it besides thousands of tourists. But "empty" London is in the sense that for a whole

The streets are crowded as much as usual, but all the same during the month of August London is shorn of a great deal of its wonted life. One sees confirmation of the fact in the dearth of news in the papers, which are smaller in size, and the "stant" Press is hard put to it to find grias for the peculiar mill This year we have not had even a big crime or a mystery to make a fuss about, and one feels almost sorry for some of the enter prising people in Fleet Street.

This was the text of a cablegram received at Chelmsford from the Rev. Franklin Isaac Hutchinson, rector of Doddinghurst, Essex, and now in Canada whose recent failure to return to his parish when he was expected, after a holi- day, caused widespread interest.

The cablegram was sent from Brooks, Alberta, Canada, and bore to-day's date. It was sent to the Eanes Chronicle, Chelmsford, in answer to one sent by that news- paper. This asked:
Are you re maining in Canada or returning Warders. to Doddinghurst ?”
!
Great interest was aroused when the receipt of the cablegram and the statement it contained became known to the parishioners of Dod- dinghurst, who are anxious to wel- come their Rector back to the vil lage.
It is understood that the Bishop of Chelmsford will deal with the position created by the Rector's ab- sence when he returns next week from a holiday.
Mr. Hutchinson was expected at Doddinghurst on August 12th. He left the parish for, a fortnight's holiday on July 25th Nothing was heard of him until he was found with a "party of harvesters 'in Canada: He had sailed for Canada from Cherbourg in the Canadian Pacific liner Empress of Scotland on August 4th, and had made no attempt throughout to conceal his identity
