JEWELLERY, SILKS AND LACQUER.

The Pioneer Silk Store had many new things to show this week. They have devoted one glass topped counter to a new venture which will receive a warm welcome, I am sure.

SMARTLY TAILORED, AND BRIGHTLY COLOURED.

PAMELA'S 1929 COLLECTION,

In another column. 1. have given you some notes on the essentials of the 1928-1999 adrance fashions, and if you pay a visit to, Pamela's. saloon you can see how these new features are used. A wonderful collection of model frocks and hats from the important Paris and London houses has just been, un- packed, and they prove that the new season mode is very lovely and gracious combining as it dace the thic of tine" with colour and movement,..

The collection of dresses may be divided into sports suits and after- доба or evening gowns. Sports suits are not, of course, all intend- ed for playing golf in, and many of them are as smart as the after noon Trocks that they so often re- place.

There are three quite distinct expressions of sports, wear." First and most popular are the two piece auite with a woellen sweater and The gaily patterned silk skirt. skirt is generally of crêpe de chine but very soft satin crêpe and even printed silk are used. Nearly in. variably the skirt is knife pleated. The pattern of the silk stresses in every case the colour of the jumper and very often the latter is trimmed in some way with the skirt material. The same effect is seen in suite with the jumper of Katakla, a sort of wool crêpe, and silk plented skirts, which have each of them a kerchief of the same silk to wear across the shoulders.

I saw, for example, a suit of Persian red Katakla, which is worn over a skirt with graduated red spots on a black ground, and an other of alia the green with a pink and green check skirt. Beige Katakia makes the jumper to be worn over a kilted skirt of black and brown plaid.

Among the suits with woollen knited jumpers perhaps the most charming is in clear amber yellow. the skirt having a gay pattern of small blue, red, and green flowers on a yellow ground, though a honey beige in a fancy knit stitch which is worn over a black marrocaine skirt is also very chic, The black is used as a plain band at the acck of this jumper-and-a-mano zram worked in yellow silk gives the definite note which holds the ensemble together.

The second style is the crepe de chine suit, which is intended for smart afternoon wear. Perhaps the most chic of qil has a jumper, with a close fitting neck line fastening at the back, of navy blue, and a knife pleated skirt patterned in blue and white. A kerchief scarf. of the same silk can be worn across the" shoulders if desired.

Last came the all wool suite in very fine jersey. Most of these are three-piece though some of them are an ensemble of jumper and skirt only. The jumper is generally of a different colour to the skirt and cardigan, but je strapped or trim- med with applique of the second colour.

There is, for example, a three- piece of navy and beige. "The latter is used for the jumper, which has a large modernistic" bow of the Davy appliqué in front at the waist. Scarlet and natural make another very chie suit.

SEEN IN LOCAL SHOPS.

LASY, CRAWFORD's furnishing de partment has some lovely cretonnes including the "Tootal" fabrics mentioned elsewhere, and "Rural Eton" designs There is an ex- cellent selection of reasonably priced cretonnes in at present, and I hear that a new shipment is 4x pected very shortly.

ARE YOU A MEMBER?

What is the S.P.T.O.W.1 fortunately, it does not exist "at present but it most certainly should, it is the "Society for the Proper Treatment of Windows" How many people treat their win- dows, the eyes of their rooms, pro- perly! In very many houses you will see them misused, blinded by heavy hangings, their proportions In the ladies department I found spoilt by ill arranged valances, or with curtains some new flowers, both for evening draped sketchily and day" wear. The colour range that only make them look more runs from white and palest pink bare. Things have, in fact, come throngh almost every tone of pink, to such a pass that there actually. red and bronze to wonderful orchid is a movement set afoot by architects and manve tones. time that the S.P.T.O.W. was formed.

I saw also in the same depart- ment same Jaeger shetland kait cardigans in white and pastel shades, and several very smart Jaeger jumper suits with knitted skirt and sweater trimmed with a woven, silk design. «

Chintz lamé is the very newest thing for evening gowns and one of the big Paris houses is using velvet-chintz for picture frocks. We are lucky in being able to get this latter material here in WRITE- WAY, LAIDLAW's. Although it has been procured as furnishing mate- rial it would make wonderful even ing cloaks or in frocks conjunction with plain ring velvet.

„FELIX is expecting over 200 after roon and evening dresses on Man- day. The frocks contained in the last shipment went so rapidly that there is little in shop to-day, except of course, the new autumn hats which are extremely attractive, and are very reasonably priced.

Among the charming new even ing frocks I

w in the DOLLY VARDON EAT SHOP yesterday are a couple of black taffetas models, One is trimmed with appliqué flowers of painted silk which are outlined with a tiny rule of gold lace; the other, which has a two tiered skirt and a "V" neck back and front, has circles of bright- ly coloured small dowers sewn on to both bodice and skirt. I saw one most charming sports suit with a white silk jumper" and knife pleated pink and white plaid skirt. The jumper having a collar and tie of the skirt material. I was told that a large number, of jumper suits are expected some time next week.

The Daisy de Luxe" bags, of which I wrote last week, have proved as popular as I thought they would and a new consignment has been ordered.

YOUR WINTER COAT.

CUFFS AND KERCHIEFS.

The new curtain nets" which 1 saw in Whittaway, Laidlaw's yės- terday are responsible for some of this oathurst, although if you are a regular reader of these columns you will know that it is a subject which has always been very near These nets which are my heart. woven of silk and 'cottan net arr are most attractive of their kind I have seen. You will perhaps re- member the first coloured curtain nets which were quite plain. After them cau nets with silk borders key patterns and stripes. Then the borders began to be more fanciful flowers and lace designs were introduced, and among the last shipment (about three months ago) came nets which were broidered in a lace design with gold or coloured silks...

ex-

The newest of all are woven of silk thread in fairly close designs inspired by stamped velvet, and have a richness and "body" which none of the earlier nets had, the patterns, in fact, have become a part of the fabric instead of being a trimming.

The colours are rich and varied." Blues, golds, and azelia pinks are the first favourites, though green and even black patterned with gold are shown the latter being very attractive indeed.

Losos, August 22nd. Miss Tallulah Bankhead's ad mirers had queued up for hours on Tuesday outside the Lyric Theatre.
