"LOCAL BASEBALL SURPRISE.
FILIPINO CLUB'S DOUBLE DEFEATS.
HONG KONG AMERICANS PLAY, THE OLD BALL GAME,
RUFFIN THE HERO OF THE DAY.
[BY C. C.]
The old adage" Never count your chickens before they are hatched"-came very true in the case of the Filipino Baseball Club. After defeating the South China Dragons (who have won the championship for the last four consecutive years), three times this season, and also disposing of the local Americans twice, the Filipinos had, everyone thought, just as good as won the champion- ship. They had only to defeat the Hong Kong Baheball Club once, although two games remained to be played and the champion- ship would have been theirs.
As I said in my notes last week the Americans are not a team to be taken lightly. This outfit ia a dark horse and liable. to romp home winner at any time. This had was, indeed. justified for the Filipinos were not only defeated on Saturday but yesterday us well.
The Americans were in splendid form and they played the "old ball game as they did in the old country. They outshone the Filipines in batting, pitching and field. Ruffin, the pitching ace of the winning pack, was the hero of both days. He twirled a brilliant
game and had the Filipinos completely baffled. He sogged the pill all over the Russakoff was the big bat. feld and made a home run in each game.
SPORTSMANSHIP BEFORE CHAMPIONSHIP.
On Saturday, the Americans were only able to field six men. They were three men short, and according to rules, the Filipinos could have claimed the point, and would have thus won the cham- He put pionship. Manager Ruli, however, decided otherwise. sportsmanship before the championship honours, and allowed the Americans to select three Chinese players from the Junior division to make up the team..
It was a real sporting decision, and after all the game is more important than the result and the Filipinos are to be congratulated on the line they took even though they were defeated to the tune of B to runs. It was rather disappointing, of course, for in claim- ing the point, there would have been nothing mean or unsports- manlike. It would have been only conforming with the rules of... the game The Americans are out of the league with six defeats chalked against them, and this victory over the Filipinos gives the Dragon, another chance and the championship is again in the balance.

COMMENTS ON THE PLAY,
For the Americans every man played a sterling game. Ruffin was largely instrumental in winning both games for his side. His pitching was never at fault and. the deliveries were something different from what the fans" have been accustomed to seeing in Hong Kong, It was a pity that Rush did not show himself to advantage at the beginning of the season, for if he had, the championship would assuredly have gone to the Ameri- Fernandez 1fgans, Heretofore, the Americans -Delagado r.f. have always broken down after the first four or five innings, but in the last two games, they appeared to gain energy as the game went
