The s. Things left Batavia with a full cargo for a round trip calling at Batavia, Semarang, Soerabaia, Makassar, Shanghai, Kobe, Yokohama, Kobe, Moji, Amoy, Hong Kong and Singapore, The Java-China-Japan Lijn was then a limited Company with a capital of £3,000,000 and possessing

Beet of three ships: Tipanas, Tjilatjap, Tjimahi, of about 5,000 tons dead weight each. When the scheme was announced in Holland for the establishment of this new enterprise, the public there and in the Dutch East Indies showed very little confidence and called to mind that since 1878 on several occasions an attempt was made to establish a steamship ser vice between the Dutch East In- dies China & Japan, but without

auccess.

In the case of the Java-China Japan Lijn, however, the Dutch Government was prepared to give the necessary assistance and grant- ed a subsidy of £3,750,000 on con- dition that this should be paid back by instalments as soon as the profits of the Company were over 5 per cent of the capital.

During the first ten years of their existence, the Java-China. Japan Lijn made practically no profits and it was not until the year 1913 that they could begin re funding the subsidy.

In 1918 the fleet of the Company consisted of 11 ships and the Java China-Japan Lijn in conjunction with two large Dutch Mail Lines opened the Java Pacific Line, a monthly service with four steamers plying between Java, Hong Kong and the Pacific Coast."**
