One of the biggest Ares seen for some time in the Colony. occurred at noon yesterday when the superstructure of the Hong Kong, Canton and Macao Steamboat Company's ressal, the Sui Tai, was gutted while the ship was at her wharf.
The vessel has been towed to Kowloon Dock, but on inquiry at the Steamboat Company's Office no statement of the damaga was as the officials were all too busy to give any information when our representative called.
We learn, however, that the damage below the main deck was practically nil, engines, boilors and bulkheads being intart.
The damage was of a very extensive nature and at 19.30 p.m., about a quarter of an hour after the fire had started 'a
Warning. was spread that the boilers might explode. The big crowd that had assembled to watch the flames, which at that time enveloped the ship and were sweeping across the wharf, at once showed signs of consternation' and started to disperse in confusion.
Fortunately, nothing of the king happened and thanks to very fe work on the part of the Are brigade who were under the personal direction of the 0.8.F. (the Hon. Mr. E. D. C. Wolfe, C.M.G.), and the sxtreme effectiveness of the fire float the fames were gradually subdued. "

INFLAMMABLE CARGO.
The cause of the fire has not been stated bat it is thought to have started on the passenger deck at the stern of the vessel. There is supposed to have been some very inflammable material among the cargo including, Chiness crackers Several tins of oil and a quantity of fireworks and other cargo were removed from the ship and thrown on the wharf by the firemen
Captain Matthews, the master of the Sui Tai, was in his cabin when the fire broke out and had to jump onto the wharf from the passenger deck and then dash through the flames sweeping the wharf to reach safety. The Wharfinger, the Chief Officer and the latter's daughter all had narrow escapes but fortunately there are no casualties to report.

REVENUE PROSECUTION:
The two Tai Tung distillery em- ployees who were the subject of a protest by Mr. M. K. Lo at the Central Magistracy regarding their alleged detention in the office of the Superintendent of Imports and Exports, were brought before Mr. R. E. Lindsell at the Central Magistraer yesterday morning. They were Lau Ki. manager- accountant, and Chiu Hing, e foa, who were charged on various counts of conspiracy to defraud the Tevenue of duties payable spirits. A third defendant was Tsai Yip, who was summoned, as licensee of the Tai Tung distillery, for failing to supply necessary in- formation to the Superintendent of Imports and Exports.

Mr. Lindsell remarked that hav
previous ing heard evidence in a case against the same, distillery, there might be a suggestion at the back of his mind of suspicion against the defendants. Therefore it might be better for the case to he heard by the Second Magistrate. On the other hand the case was of a complicated and technical nature, and as the Second Magistrate bad not previously had the opportunity of going into a distillery case, he (Mr.. Lindsell) thought that might possibly outweigh the disadvantage of any possibility of bias if he took the case.
