A cable sent last month to The Daily Mail from Athens by Major John Godolphin Bennett, of the Anglo-Hellenic Finance "Corpora- tion and an ex-officer of the British Army, recalls the remarkable and, romantic claim made on behalf of the heirs of the late Sultan Abdul Hamid of Turkey of the restoration of properties.
During the 30 odd years that Abdul Hamid was Sultan of Turkey-be was dethroned in 1909 and died in 1918-he acquired a fortune catimated at £8,000,000, and property all over the Ottoman Em pire.
After his death his heirs claimed property constituting nearly half the province of Salonica, a big share of Macedonia, large portions of Syria and Mosul, and some thou- sands of acres in Cyprus.
In December, 1999 Mr. Irwin Untermeyer, the American lawyer, sailed for Europe to present to the
Lausanne Conference the claims of 28 Turkish princes and princesses, the heirs of Abdul Hamid, to an oil property in Mesopotamis valued at more than £200,000,000,
Major Bennett was at Lausanne representing the Turkish heirs, and arranged for Mr. Untermeyer's co- operation when the latter was pre viously in Europe.

Arrest And Acquittal.
In March of this year Major Bennett was arrested on a charge of attempting to secure possession by false documents of the property of Abdul Hamid now in possession of the Greck Government. He stated that the deeds were handed to the Anglo-Hellenic Finance Corpora- tion on the basis of genuine owner- ship by Abdul Hamid's heirs.
He also claimed that the deeds were lawfully the late Sultan's pro- | perty and that the charge against him of producing false titles was "unfounded,
