YOKOHAMA.

OPENING CEREMONY.-

H.B.M.'S CONSUL-GENERAL OFFICIATES,

The opening of the new Union Building of the Union Insurance Society of Canton at Yokohama on August 8th was, the occasion of a gathering of "all Yokohama for eigners, besides a sprinkling from Tokyo.

Mr. W. E. Smith, Inspector of the Society, in welcoming the guests, is reported by the Japan Times to have said:

On behalf of the Directors of the Union Insurance Society of Canton, Ltd., I have much pleasure in welcoming you here this morn- ing. We are particularly glad to be able to number His Excellency Mayor Ariyoshi among our guests and we appreciate the honour he has done us in consenting to assist at this opening ceremony which marks an eventful day in the his tory of the Bociety.

"Yokohama has always been an important centre of activity for the Society, and after the disaster of September 1923 when our premises were entirely wrecked, sharing the fate of almost every other building in this City, we were among the first of the foreign firms to return to Yokohama as soon as it was possible to do a, since which time we have as you know, been housed in the little wooden structure next

door.

In our new and permanent home, which I think you will agree forms a worthy addition to the many and splendid new buildings springing up around us, we feel that we shall be better able to care for the needs of our business in this. important City which already shows early promise of resuming its old position as, the Premier Port of this Empire. Gentlemen, I will now ask you to join with me in drinking a toast to the City of Yokohama, and to its renewed prosperity and euccess.'

Britiah Consul General. This toast having been received with acclamation, Mr. Smith asked Mr. E. Hamilton Holmes, H.B.M..Consul General in Yoko- hama to formally open the build- ing.

He had two sons, of whom one is the prisoner and the other is call- ed Fok Tat Fui. The latter as far as was known was not in the

At that bearing Fok Chung Yuen was said to have absconded and his father succeeded in his action against the Bank of Canton.

Fok Chung Yuen has since been arrested on five counts, two of forgery, two of uttering forged documents and one of conspiracy, The case had a protracted hearing at the Magistracy, and one of the most important witnesses for the prosecution was to have been the accused's father, Fok Kam Chuen, but it was stated that this elderly gentleman had left the Colony and the Crown had to proceed without the assistance of this important witness. Fok Chung Yuen, how ever, was committed for trisl, and yesterday he was arraigned before the Puiste Justice. Mr. Justice P. Jacks, at the Crimina! Sessions.

incorporated Company was November 24th, 1920, was a capital of $100,000 divided into ten thou sand shares of 810 each. As a re- Bult of this merger the business of the Fook Lee & Co, cámo under the directorship of the new company, of which, Mr. Burdin. Mr. Simmons, of Shanghai, the prisoner Fok and his brother were the partners.

Prior to the amalgamation, the Fook Lee & Co. were being pressed by the Bauk of Canton for out- standing bills. On January 11th, 1921, the Fook Lee & Co. entered into 4 supplementary agreement with the new company assigning everything, even their liabilities to them. It would be obvious that the new company would not take over the liabilities unless they had some- thing tangible in return. This was in fact given when the prisoner, Fok and his brother, made over á' deed of assignment to the new con pany of certain leasehold proper-

ties..

Mr. Jenkin produced photographs of a portion of the deed of assign ment as be thought it would be interesting to the jury as showing the depths to which some people would sink in perfecting a scheme on which they had set their hearts.

The prisoner Fok, however. did not own the properties which be and his brother had assigned to Mr. H. G. Sheldon, instructed by Mr. H. C.
