The LS.O. and the Philharmonic, with their 8 or 10 concerts in the year, are not in a position to buy a musician's service, regardless of the other means he has of making an in- come. The new orchestra will, like the great American orchestras, enjoy. the exclusive services of ite mem- bemThe cost of this is, of course, considerable. Let us may £1,200 a week-the individuals and £1,200 a year, according to their status. It is considerable; but it has to be faced unless London is to go on having simply second- rate music.
