THE 43'1" ALIASES.
.Cdr. Kenworthy asked the Home Secretary, Sir W. Joynon-Hicks, in the House of Commons whether, in view of recent cases, he proposed to introduce legislation to deal with bogus night clubs in the metro- politan area.
JAZZ AND KISSES.
Lord Lonsdale exchanging hats with a Pearly Frincess danced at the Costermongers' Carnival at the International Horse Show, Olym pla, Kensington, W. The sporting earl was in his element among the costermongers, whose 40 turnouts made a picturesque display in the
arena.
He kissed grandmothers, gave cigars to grandfathers, chucked babies under the chin and made friends with every Jack and Jenny in this sparkling parade.
Costermongers had spent many
Sir W. Joynson-Hicks: No. Though Mrs. Kate Merrick, pro prietress and founder of the Forty- Three Club, Gerrard-street, W., was sent to prison for six months for selling intoxicants without a licence, the club is again in full swing under the control of one of her daugh-hours and not a little expense over their turnouts. The donkeys were ters.
perfectly groomed, and many of the barrows carried bowers of flowers. Two baby donkeys rode in barrows drawn by their mothers.
When the club was raided in May it was known as the Cecil. It was struck off the register, and the premises were, disqualified from being used as a club for five years, says the Daily Mail. But patrons can still obtain entrance, and they find it unchanged since it was open- ed in 1921 as the Forty-Three.
It is now registered as the Rich. mond Club, but is still known, as it always has been. as the Forty Three. The only difference is that Miss Nancy Merrick has replaced her mother in the little office behind the closely guarded door,
Ba.m. Daness.
A correspondent who visited the new Richmond Club writes:-
On payment of a fee and the mention of a friend who is a mem- ber I was able to gain admission.. This club, variously known
As Proctor's, the Cecil, and now the Richmond since it changed its name from the Forty-Three, was just the same as it was in the old days.
No drinks were available. There were some 40 giris, and dancing was carried on until 5 a.m. Every- thing was very quiet, but I am at a loss to understand the mean ing of disqualification when it seems to make no difference, ex- cept that drinks are not served.
Law Helpless,
During the prosecution of Mrs. Merrick at Bow-street, Mr. Herbert Muskett, the prosecuting counsel, said:-
As showing the absolute futility of the present state of the law with regard to clubs.. this place (the Cecil Club) was raided on May 24th, and on June 1st a new club was registered in the name of the Richmond Cib. Its Fre mises are one room, almost en tirely filled by a billiard table. on. the second floor of the same build-
int.
4
Any disqualification you may make can have no effect, because that part of the premises is no part of the club you are dealing with. It is perfectly apparent that this is a room where intoxicants will be sold, and the rest of the building will be used by persons frequenting this club.
After these proceedings it will be almost impossible "to obtain any evidence to justify further proceedings in connection with" this establishment. As the law atands now, that state of things cannot be altered.
GLASGOW GANG FIGHT.
BOYS WITH SWORDS AND DAGGERS.
Six youths, aged from 15 to 18 were, charged at Glasgow High Court with causing the death of another youth, James Tait, who was
fatally stabbed in a gang fight out- side the High Court buildings.
The youths, who are said to be members of a gang known as the "Southside Stickers" came into conflict with a rival gang known na theCalton Entry Boys."
Tait made a deposition in which he stated that one of the accused, James McClusky, stabbed him in the back.
Witnesses spoke to seeing the fight in which they stated bottles, stones, swords, and daggers were used.
Andrew McCarthy, aged 17, one, of the "Stickers," said that when they were chased across Albert Bridge by the other gang McClus key, who had in his band a dagger covered with blood, said: “I have put that into one of them."
Frank Kearney, aged 16,- who denied that he, was the leader of the Calton Entry gang, said girls went with the gang.
The Advocate Deputy: Are the "Stickers girl-haters 1-Yes.
The hearing was adjourned,
i
Lord Lonsdale set a merry pace. He was the most active man in the arena. Here he was beating time to a contermongers' song, there he was dancing costermongers' jig. One woman danced so energetically that her long hair garae tumbling Lord Lonsdale below her waist, promptly seized the flowing coils and so danced a graceful measure.
Romping Babies,
Costermongers plump babies. covered with pearly buttons, romp- ed round the arena like animated
snowballs. Everybody responded to the spirit of carniyal, but the donkeys themselves seemed to dis- approve.
They had come to be judged and expected to be stars of the show, and here were their owners danc ing and singing and generally making merry. Forty disapprov- ing donkeys looked down their not care whether or not they won noses and pretended that they did a prize.
The two baby Jonkeys, however, shamelessly enjoyed themselves romping about with the human babies. Come here at once," summoned the mother jennies. **Shan't." retorted the baby don- keys, playing at running away.
So excellent were many of the turnouts that the task of judging was very difficult. Finally, ten costermongers were awarded ench. It was more à carnival than a competition, and at the close silver shower landed in the arena from crowded stalls and boxes.
The parade was closed by Lord Lonsdale, wearing a hat of feathers, jazzing down the whole length of the arena with a pearly princess who proudly wore his silk hat,

Ip some respects it challenges the conception of Cromwell given by contemporary representations It portrays force of character and genius, but is stronger and has more firmness of line than the portraits generally reveal.
The famous wart over the right eye-brow is there in full prominence, elongated type with which Crom but the nose is not of the thinly well's painters have sought to beautify him. It is a broad, power- ful Roman nose-shown now to have had a distinct and somewhat in- artistic twist to the left.
Board Superstition. The mask was made on September. 4th, 1888, the day after Cromwell's denth. It reproduces the short beard which Cromwell grew while he lay ill from an intermittent fever during the list.seven months of his life. He refused to have it cut be- couse of a superstition he is said to have entertained.
