BASEBALL NOTES.

COMMENTS OF A FAN.

(Br. C. L. C.]

There has been a lot of talk about the efforts of the Hong Kong Baseball Association to popularise this game in the Colony, but so far there has not been, much success in this direction and it things go on as at present. Hong Kong baseball will be by next season a thing of the past.

I commented on the inadvisability

team "off" of allowing the

to arrange a game for itself on Sun- day either with the U.S.S. Sacra- mentu or the Asheville. I suggest- of " ed last week that the team is allowed to slack down, there will be no acnior team play ing on Sunday. This has now come srue, and if the fans refer to the schedula, for this week-end, they will see that there will be only two junior games to-morrow. will be interesting to know what the gate receipts show to-morrow.

There is, however, one consola- tion for the fans. They will be able to witness an interesting_game this afternoon at the Happy Valley diamond between the track Fiu pinos and the South China Dragons. "The former won in the first ea- counter, but since then the Dragons have been licking themselves into shape. They have been practising almost every day, and judging from all appearances, they should beat the Filipinos this afternoon.

There is really cothing wrong with the Dragons' players. They are all seasoned baseballers, and "they have had the honour of being the Colony's champions for four coo secutive years. I can only say that the game this afternoon will be a fully extended. It is quite key that the Dragons will stage one of their wonderful" come-backs and walk off with the championship again this year. However, let us see what these two teams will do.

whereas it would be improper to retain as a méjaber of the American Davis Cup team any player against whom such charges are pending, the American Lawn Tennis Assolation has decided to withdraw Tilden From the Davis Cup. Competition.

Straight Comment, Tilden read a statement to the Davis Cup Committee in Paris, denying the charge of any jasent to violate the letter or the spirit of the amateur rule.

Tilden declared that the articles he wrote during the progress of the Wimbledon tournament were straight comment and were by no means an attempt to report the Tournament.

Tilden concluded by saying that he offered his services to Mr. Wear for practice with the team until the challenge round against France has to be played.

Stories Of Eye Witnesses. At about 3.30 on the morning o' June 4th at the moment Marshal Chang's car passed the viaduct, a terrine explosion occurred, which was beard all over Mukden. A few seconds after the explosion the pas sengers in the train heard a thun- dering crash, evidently caused by the steel spang of the S. M. R. viaduct falling down on the train. After the explosion the train is said to have moved on, but after the crash it stopped.

The bodyguard or the train im mediately alighted and, finding nobody round, started firing in the air as a demonstration and alarm signal. The firing was only kept up for a few minutes.

Marshal

Shortly afterwards Chang Tso Lin and Marshal Wu Chun Sheng, who had been sitting together in the observation room in the centre, of the former's car, were taken out and attended to. Both were seriously injured.

Eoth steel bridges of the north en span and the eastern bridge of the central span were blown up at the ends where they were supported by the northern pier; the western bridge of the central span was dis lodged.

The upper portion of the north- era pier (granite masonry with core of concrete) was largely des troyed.

The explosion completely wreck- ed the Marshal's car" and "the din ing car and partly the blue steel car in front. The significant fact in this connection is that while the un-roofs and walls of the cars were completely smashed to shreds the chassis were left almost intact as was the track underneath.

Conclusion As To The Explosion.

The following conclusions must be drawn

1.-The explosion was caused by a great quantity of high explosive, placed on the zorthern pier, under neath and beside the northern and central spans of the bridge.

NEW YORK, July 19th A message from Paris states that Tilden has been instrumental in soothing the ruffled feelings of the American Davis Cup team who threatened to strike.
