He filled other posts, including that of Commis sioner at Wej-hai-wei, and retired in

1021.

While in the Far East he rande a close study of Chinese culture, which he has written; and the present collection of about fifty paintings shows his apprecia- tion of the art of the. Chinese.

The paintings range in period from the beginning of the Northern Sung in A.D. 991 to quite modern times. The best of the Sung pic tures is an eagle by Chao Ch'ong, dated 091; and the experts say that the best painting in the whole col. lection is probably that by Huang Kung Wang of a Yuan landscape of wooded hills...

There is another painting of an unusual kind. It is composed entirely! of coloured silks, and is believed to have been in the palace under the Ming dynasty. There is also à picture of great beauty and interest described as "Mangolia Tree with Rock and Birds." This is said to have been done by the "Old Buddha herself, the Empress Dowager.

The Life Line At Sea. Mh. C. „G. Ammon, one of the Labour Members of Parliament, is introducing into the House of Com- mons a Bill to make compulsory the provision of a life-throwing ap paratus in all ocean going ships. A few years ago a very good ship's rocket appliance was invented, and it has been the means of saving many lives that would have been otherwise lost in the case of ships in distress at sea. It is in use in the Royal Navy, and the Coast guard Service; and it is carried on ships owned by some British and foreign steamship companies. But the provision of the apparatus is optional.

Draped In White, M. Masson's account of the pro- ceedings as follows;

Something white appeared to grow out of the curtain hiding the medium, resembling the clas sical ghost which we have all read and dreamed about. It was thin and long and draped in white veiling.

Madeleine struck seven notes on the open piano, then danced a few steps and, moving forward, kissed her mother, meanwhile speaking in a curious falsetto voice. The figure then cline swaying and skipping round the chairs, offering flowers. It was a horrible sight, until suddenly my companion and through the thin veiling caught sight of braces!

The fraud was palpable, My companion seized the ghost by one arm while I jumped up and took it by the neck, at the same time switching on my pocket- lamp. I pulled away some cot- fon-wool-and there was the face of Blaise, the gardener.

Not one of those present was grateful for the disclosure and, upsetting the chairs, they rushed attack the two intruders who had dared to try to sbatter their illusions.

Bruised And Battered. M. Blaise got away in the con- fusion, and finally M. Masson and
