Until the discovery of these relics, experts declare, the existence of a bronze art period in Bengal at this early date was quite unknow They appear to have been modelled partly on the lines of the important Buddhist School of Behar, at Nalanda, near Patna, where excava tions have been proceeding for ten years with notable results. Three of the images were evidently brought to Chittagong from Behar, while others show unmistakable traees of local art. The inscriptions on the Buddhas particularly display many local characteristics.
Sab-Inspr. Sharman was then called and gave evidence of prost that the same pistol was used in each of the murders, and produced photographs of empty cartridge cases found. nent the exes of the murders which, when compared
with those fired from the pistol· found at a house in Chapej by Det.-Sub-Inspr. Campbell, led to no other conclusion than that the sabe pistol was used.
Accused were remanded.-North China Daily News.

The Chittagong find is regarded as registering the halfway-house between old Indian Buddhism and modern Burmese religious art. It is the largest find of bronze images ever made in Bengal. Isolated old Buddhist images have been found at Chittagong during the last tea years. A small collection of these may be seen in the existing Bud- dhist monastery in Chittagong, but it remained for more recent dis- covery to revent to archaeological experts how väried and rich this phase of art was at one time in Bengal. Chittagong is to-day Buddha's last stronghold in India
