TENNIS LEAGUE,

"A" DIVISION.

HONG KONG C.C. BEAT UNIVERSITY.

In the three divisions of the Tennis League the main feature of the matches has been the consoli dation of the position won by the Chinese Recreation Club. They have had a remarkable series of successes during June; so much sa that they have placed themselves at the top of the three tables where they are expected to remain. Re- ports of their successful progress

On their own courts yesterday, from time to time have been re- ! corded. They have four different the Hong Kong Cricket Club beat teams in the League, all of whom the University in the "A" Division The different sets have, so far, come off unbeaten. by 17 games. They have eclipsed all the other were well fought out, but the win clubs in the competition and their aers maintained slight superiority spectacular performances have made throughout, losing only one set. the League more interesting than it Scores:- would otherwise have been.

Lieut. Hale and McEachran

(H.K.C.C.)

They have already won the “A” Division, beating the M.B.K. in their last match on Thursday, and as they have won all their matches, the are, therefore, in an unapproach- able position in the League Table. team A review of their "A" matches shows that 12 players took" part in the sit" matches. Of these G. Ng Sze Kwong, Ho Ka Lau, M, K. Lo, M. W. Lo, Yew Man Kit and Ng Sze Cheurg formed the original team. Yew Man Kit left for Shang- hai in the middle of May, while Ny Sze Cheung was "invalided out." The others were: C. Choa, Ju Tak Cheuk, Kwok Po Kua, Lau! Fook Li, Horace Lo and Lau Man Ching. The changes in the different matches did not, apparently, weaken the side, in fact the reserves called upon proved most reliable.

They have thus an average of 66.5 games won in each match as against an average of 325 games lost in each match, which is a performance hard to equal. But perhaps their strength can be better emphasised by showing that they won 48 sets and lost only in the six matches played,

They have won the Shield for the third time in succession, and thir is the second time they have done this version of the "hat trick." In all they have won the Shield seven times, viz., in 1917, 1919, 1920, 1921, 1923. 1927 and 1928. The Hong Kong Cricket Club, European Y.M.C.A., and Indian Recreation Club have won the Shield two years cach, while the Civil Service Cricket Club and United Service Recreation Club one year. They had a set- back for five years between 1921 and 1928, but since then they have come forward with admirable per- serverance.

The current matches of the League have proved interesting. Yesterday the Hong Kong Cricket Club beat the University on their courts, à detailed report of which appears elsewhere in this issue. The winners were without the ser- vices of E. D. Lawrence who was replaced by W. B, Cornaby, but the change did not affect, the result materially as the Club had 17 games! in hand at the end. The struggle between the two sides was even on the whole. Seven sets finished at 6-5, while G. W Sewell and A. D. Humphreys registered a 0-2 set and Rev. F. P. W. Alexander and W. B. Carbaby a 83 set, for the Club.
